I'm doing real work at the moment. It's a light one - preparation of
LaTeX slides for my teaching. Thus I use rather simple software: the
Vim 6 (a Motif GUI version), the XFig (with the Xaw3D GUI), the XPdf
(it uses the Motif, too), a bunch of terminals (SGI's own XWSH ones),
the Firefox (just to browse the Mastodon) and few other things like the
GQView picture viewer. I use my SGI O2 computer for that (it has a 250
MHz R10000 MIPS CPU).
For all this stuff I need under 500 MB of RAM as about 550 MB of 1024
MB available is still free. And the computer is fast enough.
If I will try to don on a contemporary ARM Linux computer then its
whole RAM will be uses (2 GB in my case) and I will not able to work
faster. It has eight CPU cores (4x 2.0 GHz, 4x 1.5 GHz).
What a progres after 30 years of computer hardvare development! ;-)
