gef's 5 questions

I was happy to see that gef revived Christy
O'twisty's 5 questions last month. I'm a bit late
to the party, as usual, so have never done one of
these before. Let's see ...

1. Favourite soup

I'm going to say, there's this Carrot Ginger soup
that comes in a tetra pack, I forget which
brand. It's really good; my wife (who is an
excellent cook) likes to pretend she made it from
scratch when she serves it, typically as the soup
course before a big holiday meal. It may be the
association with big holiday meals, is the reason
I like the soup so much.

2. Everything I'd want to download before the
collapse of the Internet

Oh good grief. How about the entire Internet
Archive, for starters? Honestly, I would have no
idea where to begin with a project like that. I'd
probably just stare at my computer in a state of
dazed paralysis until it was too late. And then
I'd pick up a book, just like I did back before
the Internet was a thing I had access to.

3. Dream I remember most

When I was 8 or 9, I had a dream I was travelling
somewhere with my parents. We came to the base of
a big concrete tower, sort of like a lighthouse,
in the middle of a barren field.  It was
windowless with one door at the base of it.  My
mom and dad left me outside the door to wait for
them, while they went inside to ask directions.  I
waited for a long time, but they didn't come back.
So I entered the tower. It was hollow, with a big
spiral staircase winding around the inner wall.  I
climbed to the top of the tower, only to find a
small empty room with no one inside.

4. Most exciting thing about spring

We have a new garden in the back yard! It was
planted about a month ago, and I've been
diligently watering it every evening (on days when
it didn't rain). Now all the plants are growing
like crazy! It's like magic.

5. Interesting website hidden beneath the
increasingly crappy surface web

As it happens, I've been maintaining an inventory
of old-school non-commercial websites on my home
page (link below), so I have plenty to choose
from. I'm going to go with the late science
fiction author Alexei Panshin's web site, called
"The Abyss of Wonder," a wonderful collection of
his critical writings and some fiction. It
includes the full text of his Hugo award winning
study of Robert Heinlein, "Heinlein in Dimension."
It was the first book-length critical study of
Heinlein's work, and Heinlein never forgave him
for it.
