Killing animals is part of my job. But I do wonder if it exacts a
toll. The rabbits are the most visceral. The only live dispatch. With traps
and bait there is a disconnect. It is the poison that kills, it the
trap that kills. Not me. But at the rabbit job it is me that kills. I
take the rabbit in my hands and kill it. A sudden act of controlled violence.
Swift and brutal. I look it in the eyes as it expires. I think when I
can't do that, I need to find another job.
