I love Clunky tech...

What do I mean by that? Well for me it
usaully brings to mind older technolgies.
One example that stands out in my mind is
our first computer...an old compact
desktop running some ancient version of
DOS. I would say DOS 3.0 since I still
have a 5 1/4 floppy with that on it.
Then just a little bit later we swapped
out for an IBM PC. Can't remember
the exact model, but it was a buisness
machine that looks similar to what
Ferris Bueller used in that 1987
movie. (I only know that becuase I
watched it last week :-) ).
Speaking of the past my Grandpa
had a console turn table/radio/
8 track player. I was quite
intrigue by it since I was rasied
in a time of cassettes/CDs. The
simplicity and style of it was
awesome. He also had an old all
in one television/radio console,
but it was stored in his barn
gutted many years before I came
along. I wanted to fix
it up and put modern tech in it.
Best of both worlds I thought.
Unfortunately, when he passed
away the house was sold and the
TV/Radio console disappeared.

This love of "clunky" tech is
probably why I love the Fallout
games so much. I would love to
have a pip-boy...at least as close
as we could get. And terminals on
that game...perfection. The color,
the sound effects they use, and
a fictional tape base storage
medium...just perfection.

Anyway I think I'll wrap it. I
figured I would give a little
insight into the iclunk user
name I chose for SDF. Maybe in
the next phlog I'll talk about
my homebrew software suite for
a Linux terminal which I call
Clunkbox.

Until next time...
