## 20 Silence on the medical rapist
Did you know that one of the world's biggest rapists (perhaps the biggest) was a French doctor? His second trial ended last week, and he was convicted for raping 299 victims. There could have been more, but there was no proof of the other cases. The victims were listed in the doctor's notes. He was a specialist in digestive surgery. Most of the victims were young—from babies to teenagers—and were raped before or after surgery. The oldest victim was 71 years old, and the doctor may have been a necrophiliac. Some of the victims have died, some by suicide after experiencing severe consequences from the rape. Sometimes, the victims didn't remember anything, but their bodies did. Dr. Joël Le Scouarnec was a monster, and his trial should have been the trial of the century, following another major trial in France: the Gisèle Pelicot rape case.
There were daily reports about Gisèle Pelicot in the newspapers and on TV, but not about Joël Le Scouarnec. There were just some descriptions at the beginning of the trial and interviews with victims. The main problem is that, during all those years of rape, many alerts were issued, yet nobody did anything to end this surgeon's career. Nobody at the hospitals where he worked, nobody at the regional health authority, and nobody at the medical council did anything. The CIA (Falcon Operation) alerted French authorities after he was caught looking at and buying pedophile photos and videos in 2004. However, this was not indicated on his criminal record. He was only sentenced to a four-month suspended prison sentence. He was not arrested for rape, and no further inquiries were made at that time. He was even hired in a small hospital with no restrictions on pediatric surgery. In 2022, some associations filed a complaint against the health authorities, but there has been no trial yet.
It wasn't until 2017 that a young girl told her parents that an older neighbor had touched her. Two of his nieces also filed complaints of sexual abuse. He was first sentenced to 15 years in prison for abusing those four victims. However, more than 300 victims were found in notes and files on his computer. Since he had already served eight years, if he were sentenced to the maximum of twenty years, it would not be cumulative, and he could be released in less than five years, considering his age (he is 75 years old). Sometimes the US justice system can be flawed but it can also be inspiring (he could have been sentenced to 4,100 years).
This trial has had other scandals as well. There was silence in the media and politics, except for some left-wing deputies. It was as if everyone was trying to minimize the trial and avoid discussing what went wrong for years and years, even though some of his colleagues had alerted the authorities while others were blind to it. His wife knew some things about it, but she was too happy living with a surgeon in a small castle. They are now separated. Even with victims in her family, it doesn't seem to bother her. Unlike Mrs. Pelicot, there were no closed doors during the trial, but the media downplayed everything.
If the trial for Gisèle Pelicot's rape was gloomy and dirty, Joël Le Scouarnec's is even worse. He is a real manipulator around psychologists and colleagues. He had no limits when it came to his sexual behavior with children. He only remembers what he wants to remember, and during the trial, he admitted to everything listed in his notes, but nothing more. He claimed that he didn't remember the details. He loved scatology and sexually abusing babies with his fingers or other objects, as well as other acts involving his "cock." We were spared nothing during this trial, except the broadcast of the proceedings and, above all, the indictment of the accomplices. I doubt that another trial will happen for that. Other cases of rapist doctors and surgeons are now coming to light, not only involving children. I'm not saying that every doctor is a potential rapist, but some of them shouldn't be in this profession. Le Scouarnec was able to thwart all tests, serious or not, and his accomplices after his first convictio
n. The authorities used the excuse of a lack of doctors in France to keep Le Scouarnec as an active surgeon.
When I see how some doctors, particularly gynecologists, behave with their patients, I can only attest to their lack of empathy. Some are only here to take money and prescribe ineffective drugs without looking for the causes of disease. An increasing number of patients, like me, have mysterious chronic illnesses with no effective treatment other than alleviating the symptoms. This is becoming increasingly expensive, even though France is one of the best countries for health care. Some medical students are advocating for courses that address patient support and suffering. The role of sex in medical studies, including hazing, has often been criticized. Health is a major issue in France that should be addressed. Too many doctors act as if they are untouchable by justice.
