so i finally did it. i put a mail server together last night
and was able to send emails to other external addresses.
however, i did put myself in a strange position where the
emails weren't making it to my inbox; and i know that it has
something to do with dovecot. i defaulted to mbox because it
was the least complicated to set up. after a bit of tweaking
this morning I was able to resolve that issue.

i got the chance to teach a very special person how to ssh
into a *nix box and to navigate around the folders. i even
taught them how to create files with nano as well as view
the file modes that get output when running ls -al. they
were really thrilled to learn all this new stuff. eventually
their attention span wore out and i finished up our
impromptu lesson. afterwards, i quickly set up a local email
system so that way we can practice using terminal mail
clients locally.

i was proud of how well they seemed to receive the new info
despite how quick everything was progressing. i feel like
they are going to give me a run for my money as they get
more experience with it. who knows, i might even have them
admin my systems ;)
