Title: Copacetic Music Hour Preview, 1/27/23: Fito Olivares
Another week has passed, which means it's time for another episode of the
copacetic music hour! This week we'll enjoy Mexican cumbia master Rodolfo
Olivares, better known as Fito Olivares. Born April 19, 1947 in Camargo, in the
northern state of Tamaulipas, Fito learned to play harmonica in the ranch where
he grew up. His father was a talented saxophonist and taught him to play from
age 12. Just four years later, he began performing professionally. He first
joined the group Duet Estrella in 1962, which released their hit "Ya No Eres
Mia" in 1963. In 1979, Fito became part of the group Tam y Tex, recording such
songs as "La Otra Musiquera", "Mi Tamaulipeca", and "Flor de Lirio". Fito then
founded the main band highlighted in this episode, Fito Olivares y su Grupo La
Pura Sabrosura, in Houston in 1980. Their biggest hit, "Juana La Cubana",
featured in the 1995 film "Lone Star", was nominated for Lo Nuestro Awards,
while their next hit, "El Colesterol", won an ASCAP award for best regional
Mexican song in 1996. Later on Fito would found his own recording studio
(Japonica Studio) and record label (Sabrosura Music).

Tonight, as always, we'll enjoy a sampling of Fito's hits alongside a fireside
IRC chat at tilde.chat channel tilderadio (#tilderadio). Join us!
