My new-old 2006 Mac Pro just came in today. I'm absolutely loving how fast this
machine is. It compiled XimpleMOD and Bean without the hiccups my '09 iMac had,
but the real test will be how well it runs Kubuntu...when I can order some more
drive caddies. The seller only included one caddy for the drive that was
shipped with it, so I've got to order three more. They're only around $10 USD
each, so I'm not too worried about that.

I'm intending for this thing to be a triple-boot dev environment for myself,
with Mac OS 10.6.8, Windows 7, and Kubuntu (latest) as options. That's on top
of being a daily driver, so I've got most everything I need to have /only/ this
system sitting under my desk, freeing up some space on top of it in the
process. Eventually, I'll also put my drive sled and external drive away when
I can put their uses into the internal drive bays (need the caddies), freeing
up two more power bar slots as well.

Of course, I also installed some games onto it, but I need /something/ to toy
with when I'm not working on other things. Top of the list was Spatterlight[0]
and the Inform engine[1], because interactive fiction is my thing. Also put
Diablo II, Warcraft III, Starcraft, Age of Empires II, ZDOOM, ECWolf, and
Activision Anthology Remix on here as well. Just need to grab Amiga Classix at
some point to go with them. That's what Macintosh Garden[2] is for, though. <3

Over all, I'm *really* happy I got this machine, even with its flaws.

In "Next Generation Gopher-like Service" news, ratfactor talked more about
potential markup for it[3]. I like the pseudo-Markdown style, and I agree with
the sentiment about emphasized text being difficult. Even in Markdown, I've
encountered areas were I was forced to escape underscores, and it made the
raw file quite ugly.

Also, glad you enjoyed the name /Meerkat/ for it, ratfactor. It was one of
those things that just kinda dawned on me, and sounded perfect for the task at
hand.
