8 Months in the UK                                         2023-04-12
=====================================================================

Sunday marked eight months since the children and I landed at
Heathrow, zipped through passport control, and started living in the
UK. Five weeks after that, my wife received her visa and joined us.

It has taken a bit of getting used to being back here, after 11 years
in the USA. I do miss friends, the Texas sun, the BBQ, and being 30
minutes from the downtown of a big city. I don't miss the oppressive
heat that comes with the Texas sun, the guns, and the "freedom"
politics that manages to surpass most of the Tories' nasty work here.

We're renting at the moment, in mid-Cornwall, just a couple of miles
from my parents. It's properly rural, about a mile and a half to walk
to the shop in the next village past sheep and cows. Fingers crossed
we'll have managed to buy a house in the nearest town soon, and then I
can buy a BBQ / smoker and satisfy the craving for BBQ brisket and
things :-)

Work is just the same as in Texas, but in a different timezone. I've
definitely benefitted from working for a small and flexible
fully-remote company there. Has been a busy start to 2023 work-wise,
but Easter was very nice. Four day weekend, woo! Lovely weather, and
we managed to try another local taco option. Plus we bought some cake
from a charity stall, inside the hold of 100 year old Thames sailing
ship.

Life is pretty good :-)
