Title: Of Summer and Writing

Recently I spent a beautiful week in Camargue (France). It is a region located
in the south of the country, where the impact of the gypsy culture is
ubiquitous. It is a land of bulls, horses and pink flamingos. I took this chance
to take many pictures with my reflex camera - the results are not great but
some of them turned out really nice.

July has been completely dedicated to exams. My plans were to write my thesis
during August in order to start September with a 60/70% of the total work done.
Unfortunately I'm late: my writing speed is rather slow and a few days ago I
got sick. It's not covid, it must be some other flu virus - it's really making
me feel broken: fever, cough, sore throat and headache. Right now, my pdf
viewer shows a total of 31 pages. Since I had planned to write about 100 pages,
I'm at 31% of the work. With just 10 days to double it. Impossible. It seems
that September will be a tough month.

In this first part of the thesis I've discussed part of the theoretical
framework upon which I did my research. On the one hand we have the quantum
mechanics treatment of vibrations, on the other there is Group Theory. Although
interesting, I'm not going to talk about QM here. But I'd like you - my fellow
readers - to search on your favorite search engine for "Galois". This guy was
the mathematical genius behind a fundamental theory which is part of the
Abstract Algebra. Group theory has deep implications on our understanding of
nature and, in chemistry, plays a crucial role in the description and
exploitation of symmetries. Galois died at the age of 20, after the injuries
reported during a duel of honor. The night before the duel, he stayed awake in
order to collect all his mathematical work that was, at that time, unpublished.
He knew that the next day his life would come to the end.
