# 04 May 2021 - community

After getting into Gemini, I've been having some random thoughts about community. Mainly because one of the factors people were spruiking about Gemini was the community.

The interesting thing about a community is that you need a certain size and a right mix of people for it to really work. As a community starts growing, more hype is created and more people jump in. However, too big, and you get an "Eternal September" situation. Diversity is good, but overly extreme views may not be ideal either. How can we cultivate a community? Or is it right to not dabble in things and let it develop on its own?

I've come across a few gemlog entries saying that people were feeling lonely/isolated on Gemini. I can relate. I'm finding it difficult to actually find people to talk to, and talk to them. I'm probably too used to the ease of services like Facebook. Perhaps I need to take the first step, and send an email. I'm also hoping to sign up to some message boards out there...let's see how that goes.

Finally, the funny thing about community is that by definition, there's people inside, and outside. But yet the word "community" evokes ideals of inclusiveness.

derpy ending to this pretty philosophical musing:
I've been manually uploading .gmi files that I've edited to sdf.org. Is there any way to use rsync with scp? I gotta check this out!
