Hm, so I've gotten sick of writing files directly via ssh. Part of it is likely user-ignorance (still haven't gotten my head around control characters, and emacs seemed to reverse backspace and del for some reason??!) And I'm not really willing to "get used to it" when there's a simpler option nearby.
So, I'm just uploading files now, via scp.
I looked into some other hosting solutions via the Gemini startup page, but
