On social networks people tend to pick on others who said something they
don't like.
Now I see it as a behaviour that is not constructive, and eventually can
blind us from really important issues.
When Robert Silverberg said N.K.Jemisin's Hugo speech was a bit vulgar
in 2018, he might have offended a lot of people. But I don't think
people should say even more unpleasant things to him. It is the
structures and systems that causes inequality and discrimination that we
should fight against. The speech was inspiring but it did not point out
the root cause of things.
Silverberg was not fighting racial inequality, but neither did us who
liked Jemisin's works. We are not qualified to say ill things to those
whose ideas we disagree if we are not fighting the bigger monsters.
