The time had come for Fairca, the ranger, to make
good use of the money they had earned on their
previous adventure. So they were on their way
to Werona(*), a coastal town just north of the isle
of Kilda and west of Lwgar, for winter supplies.
"Mom, when do you think I'll be ready to live on
my own?"
"Now, Pip."
"So if I went out in the forest and build my own
hut and stuff, you'd think I could make it?"
"Sure."
"Then, I'll do it, next year or sooner, if you
want."
"Nah, don't. Being all by myself gets boring,
you are funny."
"Mom!"
"In a good way..."
"But I just slow you down with everything, I
don't deserve to be with you."
"Nonsense."
The boy went quiet, and walked on, eyes fixed on
the forest trail. Fairca, his adoptive mother
took a sweet time to respond.
"Pip, nobody deserves friends, sweethearts, wise
hags, children, pets, or even the wee robins who
come to dance at home. You just accept them and,
love them, forgive them a little... and... I don't
know... it's a form of kind magic.
"Like speaking to birds."
"Sorta. You are my best spell."
"You have done better magic."
"But not half as fun... Pip"
