IIRC, my first printer was a Panasonic KXP-1180i, a noisy and relatively fast dot-matrix printer. It could emulate Times New Roman if you weren't in a hurry.
A couple much-quieter inkjets followed: an HP 520 (quite good for monochrome), and then an Epson Stylus Color 440. Infrequent use of color led to regularly clogged color printheads with the latter. And inkjet printouts "ran" if they got wet.
I then had a series of monochrome laser printers from Samsung, Panasonic, and Xerox, and finally, Brother. Brother has good Linux support, but their lasers don't seem to do well with aftermarket toner.
