Right thumb's numb from cutting a dozen paperboard
egg cartons with scissors into long wiggly mulch.
Hoed up a little mountain of weeds, Matthew carried
a few buckets of them up the hill to compost.

Washing machine's disassembled downstairs. New
water pump should arrive this weekend. Chickpeas
soak on the windowsill, and steel cut oats for tom-
orrow's breakfast before Ilona takes 1st daughter
to farmer's market.

Bugz is camped in the woods tonight, Evy in Philly
for a rope thing. We drove up to Cinci so she could
catch an overnight Greyhound bus from the shadeless
gravel lot surrounded by chain link and barb wire
where buses stop. Yesterday at library toddler time
first daughter played with a bus. She said, "Mommy.
Bus. Philly!"

My hoe and shovel are sharp thanks to an old file,
wooden handles oiled with boot grease. The yellow
1960s Chicago steel Schwinn Varsity 1st daughter &
I bought today from our bike mechanic for $20's
disassembled downstairs, waiting for brass brush &
soapy rag.

I sauteed morels, garlic, ramps, & eggs in butter.
First daughter and I ate it with sourdough bread.
Before she left I served Evy chicken broth sticky
with gelatin, rich with fat, fortifying with
nettles.

Moon's full. Freight train sounds a long, low horn
the other side of the woods. If 1st daughter was
awake, she'd smile, say, "Chug chug chug chug!" I'd
smile too if she didn't dump her water on the floor
again. We'd read a book & she'd show me something
new in it: "Momma! Moon!"

Time to sleep.
