Mom heard on the radio about the devastation. She
called to ask if we were alright. We are. The second
week of Advent is for love. More light enters the
winter darkness when hope is joined by love.

I think St. Augustine discussed love as a circuit
which wants to be completed---God loves me and my
neighbor. By loving each other we love God.

God became man in love. Hegel, in his phenomenology,
charted the kenosis by which a particular unhappy
soul grows together with others into a conscious and
loving relationship with the absolute.

Love calls us to declare the Jubilee proclaimed by
Jesus---the cancellation of all personal and national
debt. In love, the Jubilee frees prisoners, feeds the
hungry, and comforts debtors' widows and orphans.

First Corinthians:

Love...pitches no tantrums, keeps no books on
insults or injuries...rejoices when truth prevails.
...On the childish level---without love---we look
at one another in a trick mirror; but with love we
see face to face.... [With love] I'll understand
 just as I'll be understood.

Love trumpets the Millennium. It peeks from quiet,
everyday places. Phone calls from mom; watching my
daughter sleep---love makes a family, even a family
of one.

Song of Songs:

Hang my locket around your neck,
wear my ring on your finger.
Love is invincible facing danger and death.
Passion laughts at the terrors of hell.
The fire of love stops at nothing---
    It sweeps everything before it.
 Flood waters can't drown love,
torrents of rain can't put it out.
Love can't be bought, love can't be sold---
it's not to be found in the marketplace.

"God loves us," my priest told me on the phone last
year. "What God wants is for us to learn to love.
Your love is sacred in God's eyes."
