I sent an email to my Chief Nursing Officer this week, asking to
go back on full-time, with pretty specific hours. That was how
my supervisor suggested I get back on full time.
"I have worked at [this hospital] for two years, on every shift
and every unit."
I sent the email in the middle of a week where I for some
perverse reason picked up crazy shifts just to show off what I
can do.
- Saturday and Sunday: 7am-7:30pm
- Monday into Tuesday: 9pm-7:30am
- Tuesday: 3pm-11:30pm
- Wednesday: 7am-3:30 pm
- Thursday into Friday: 11pm-3:30pm
That's only 70 hours, but I worked every shift. I came home
after night shift and slept for three hours before heading out
to a second shift. I've worked way harder than this, but not on
a whim.
Scheduling, who I guess assumed I was superhuman, asked me to
pick up the following Saturday and Sunday. I said, "I explored
my limits, and I think I discovered what they are. No, I need a
day off."
The Chief Nursing Officer had scheduling put me down for the
full-time job I requested. I figured I'd get a new contract to
sign Monday. Instead, fourteen hours into my Thursday/Friday
shift, the head of human resources called me to her office --
while there was a code on my unit -- to express displeasure.
I remembered our whole intricate spinning machine of techs,
nurses, nurse-managers, doctors, and therapists exists only at
the pleasure of Corporate.
I hope -- despite my unintentional act of insubordination --
Corporate blesses me with a full-time contract so I can apply
for the scholarship. I hope Corporate blesses me with hours that
won't conflict with my clinicals or childcare responsibilities.
But oh, Anna, please remember human resources is not your friend.
