The staff of the computer center make up various NOTICE files which either
WILL or WON'T type out automatically just as you LOGIN. Whether they WILL or
WON'T is determined in a clever way which is simple. These NOTICES range
from very important, to barely interesting, and they are designed for all
users to read and put away in their sleeping brains somewhere. For this
reason, the staff (most of us) consider it of utmost importance that they be
kept VERRRRY SHORT (like less than one line). Why short? So you won't
<ctrl-O> it.
<CTRL-O> ?? You mean ?? I can do THAT ??
Yes. Unfortunately, the <CTRL-O> cuts off those one-line NOTICES forever.
When you <CTRL-O> a NOTICE, you just blew your one chance to see it. Thats
right! Here is the story.
THE STORY
There are 10 possible NOTICE files, which are sent to you, depending on
whether they were created since you last LOGGED IN. So if you have seen one
of the notices which is there, by LOGGING IN, it will not be sent to that
[p,pn] again when it LOGS IN. IF we make up a new one, though, it will have
a new creation date, and you will see it. Our NOTICE file names are:
NOTICE.0, NOTICE.2,...,NOTICE.9 . This way, we can change
some notices, and not affect whether you see others.
BUT IVE SEEN SOME NOTICES REPEATED!
Ok. Ok. There is one other file called NOTICE.NOW . That one is always
sent to you when you LOGIN, if it exists. It rarely does, is kept EXTREMELY
SHORT, and is always VERY IMPORTANT FOR ALL USERS (like "WE CRASH EVERY
5 MINUTES")
HOW CAN I REPENT OF MY <CTRL-O> SINS ??
Well...there is one way you can get to see the notices again. It won't cost
you much, but you do have to promise never to do it again. Here's how.
After the monitor prompt (.) type
I/NOTICE or just I/NOT
and all notices will be repeated, for your benefit, immediately. For more
