====================
A Dying Profession
====================
It used to be
that "calculator"
was a job title.
Now it's a machine
that does math for people.
Nobody hires
a calculator anymore.
Anyone can buy
a calculator
for a few bucks
that will do the job
faster and better
than a person ever could.
It used to be
that "computer"
was a job title.
Not a lot of call
for people
to compute things
these days.
That's a job
for a machine.
We don't mourn
the passing of
these jobs
because we never
saw them go.
Where are the blacksmiths?
Where are the chandlers?
Who will weep
for the lost employment
of the ancient nerds
who designed
steam locomotives?
Right now,
"programmer"
is a job title.
But I have a feeling
that in ten years
that's a job
for a machine.
