We're nearing the two-year anniversary of the Republic opening to
user requests [0]. I'm happy with how things have turned out,
FreeBSD was a good choice in retrospect, it just runs without issues
and is easy to administer, something I think is key for a
non-commercial, volunteer effort. Not that one of the Linux distros
would not have been stable, but I'm leery of ongoing trends around
systemd and creeping complexity of the big Linux distros in general.

There are presently 58 users on the Republic, so we have six user
slots available before the self-imposed limit of 64 - enough that
the Republic's resources are not overwhelmed and still allow room
for Republic and Zaibatsu total users to be under Dunbar's Number
[1]. We've been averaging about five new users per month for the
past few months, so at this pace we'll stop accepting new signups in
a month or so. There is some initial discussion around a third
circumlunar outpost on the bbs, but nothing definitive yet.

So what does the future hold? That is largely up to the users - for
now most seem content to have a small internet home to publish and
communicate with the other users via the circumlunar bbs, email or
irc. Since that was the original goal of the Republic, I'm quite
content with how things are, but I am always open to suggestions!
