Sometimes it absolutely blows my mind how many "computer nerds" are
fucking stupid. Just because you use Photoshop competently and you're
a geek doesn't make you a computer expert.
I recently read an article where the author claimed Notepad was a word
processor. Not Wordpad. Notepad. When I read that, I just recoiled
slightly... This was supposed to be a tech site. Does a bare-bones
text editor really constitute a word processor? Not in my book. I
guess you could technically call it that as it does have font
selection and text size, but that's still a stretch.
Anyway, often when I'm browsing articles on tech sites, they use the
shittiest bloatware around to do things. They think that any program
using less than 1GB of RAM is "minimal."
Mac nerds are probably the worst. I know one guy who actually knows
what he's doing that uses a Mac... and considering the alternative is
Win11, I can't say I blame him much. But they're like decades behind
on productivity software and think a system that has bouncing
dock/tray icons is good... The ignorant arrogance to believe the
haphazard organization of Apple OSes is worth more than a hundred
bucks is maddening. Actually, the sheer stupidity of overpaying for
Rotten Core hardware and software is the most maddening. Not only are
they screwing themselves over, but they've emboldened other companies
to do the same fucking thing: overprice shit that's going to break in
a few years.
The other terrible "computer nerds" on my radar are the absolute
dipshits designing the UI for Win11. I hope and pray they aren't
actual devs, because doing the most mundane tasks like changing the
name of a webcam requires either shell scripting or fucking regedit.
Are you fucking kidding me? It's insane. You can change the audio
source names easily in settings, but you can't do the same for video
sources? Give me a fucking break. And they move all these important
settings from Control Panel to Settings. At best it's an inconvenience
with options moved around because graphic designers an UI/UX devs need
to justify their fucking paycheck, but often they straight up REMOVE
options and it's a trip through the wonderful Win registry to fix
it...
Lastly, Linux computer nerds are probably the most vicious, but more
often than not, they actually know what they're doing. They may not
know how to develop a "pretty" GUI, but they know how to troubleshoot
the most ridiculous, obscure problems, assuming you don't piss them
off.
BSD nerds are like finding unicorns, but they tend to be more relaxed
versions of their Linux cousins. If I could get BSD working on one of
my computers, I'd probably be one.
But seriously, how do people call themselves tech enthusiasts when
they never use CLI/TUI? If you knew shit about computers, you'd know
GUIs are often a waste of time and resources. There are definitely
tasks that are virtually required to be in a GUI, but most tasks don't
need one. I'll be the first to say I prefer gparted to parted, but
it's not like I don't know parted exists. Do you really need Task
Manager when htop or even top exists? I can't even take a "computer
nerd" seriously if they open Word to "jot" down a few notes. I don't
know why anyone short of a photographer would actually prefer GUI file
management, either. Assuming you have a decent naming scheme, you
shouldn't need a preview if you know the name of the file.
People putting spaces in folder/filenames... What are you doing? Don't
you dare call yourselves computer nerds. %20 or "\ " are just fucking
lame.
Anyway, that's my rant. I'm just tired of seeing tech advice articles
where the advice-giver doesn't know what he or she is talking about.
