<== I don't understand doomscrolling ==>

I've been seeing a lot of articles lately about people who describe
themselves as  addicted to social  media. They want to  "detox" and
even fail at that. I  just don't understand this "doomscrolling" at
all. Maybe someone can explain it to me sometime.

I’ve had a Mastodon/ActivityPub account for  over a year now, but I
only use it sporadically. I can’t really get into it. Most of it is
just short messages  and pointless chatter. I’ve  already muted the
worst posters, but I just  don't understand how someone could spend
the whole day with it. But maybe I'm using it wrong.

Generally, I tend  to take complete internet breaks  and even avoid
using my laptop, even though computers and IT are my hobby.

I’d rather go to my beloved "Petit Café" now and then and watch the
people. However, mostly  older people go there (I’m  not 25 anymore
too) and they rarely engage with their smartphones.

Anyway, I can't figure out how  someone can spend all their time on
their smartphone. I would find it rude if the people I'm talking to
at the café immediately took  out their smartphone whenever there’s
even 5 seconds of silence and started browsing social media.

I do try  to follow the new posts in  the Gopher/Gemini Space every
day,  but  not  all  day.  Besides,  the  posts  are  usually  more
interesting than the short comments on Mastodon.

I  find  engaging  with  social   media  rather  boring  and  don't
understand how anyone could have a problem with it.

But maybe it’s a generational  thing. And now enough rambling about
pseudo problems. Just stop using your smartphone.

All in all - Have fun!
