2022-10-17: Mahler's Resurrection                            rak

I first heard Mahler's second symphony, Resurrection, on
September 11, 2011. It was a free memorial concert at Avery
Fisher Hall by the New York Philharmonic, conducted by Alan
Gilbert. I listened to it daily, sometimes multiple times a day
for months afterwards, and have since heard it in concert twice
more. Eleven years later, it still makes my hair stand on end
and my eyes water. It is without a doubt one of the greatest
musical work ever composed.

I leave you with an excerpt of Mahler's text for the fifth
movement, translated from German:

> Oh Sorrow! You who pierces all things!
> From you I have been wrested!
> Oh Death! You who conquers all things!
> You are conquered at last!
>
> With wings that I have won
> In fervent pursuit of love
> I shall soar upwards
> To the light which no sight has penetrated!
