GOA Repeats Healthcare Warning: A Virginia-based gun rights group has
taken issue with the Democrat-led healthcare proposals, saying that the
proposed plans could strip citizens of their rights to own a gun. The
Gun Owners of America group, which boasts more than 300,000 members, has
been warning its ranks that the proposed healthcare legislation would
compile the information of Americans into a government database. The
group says that by using this data, the government could deem a citizen
"medically unfit" to carry a gun. "All of the proposals that we're aware
of would handle people's health data that way," said Larry Pratt,
executive director of the group. "And then you end up having a gazillion
people lose their gun rights because of some medical record that someone
doesn't like, where they say, 'Oh, that might be a danger to their self
or others.' No trial, no due process, just gone." The group also objects
to Health and Human Services Secretary Katherine Sebelius, saying that
she is prone to restrict gun rights... (Kansas only has licensed CCW
because the legislature finally overrode Sebelius's last veto of the
enabling legislation.)

Coburn Honored by GOA: Amid a national debate on constitutional rights,
a national conservative group hosted a banquet in Tulsa to honor Sen.
Tom Coburn for his defense of the 2nd Amendment. Larry Pratt, executive
director of Gun Owners of America, spoke before a packed banquet hall
Friday and praised Coburn for passing the only federal legislation this
year to defend the people's right to bear arms. "The people are becoming
confrontational, " Pratt said in reference to town hall meetings over
proposed changes in health care. "Politics is confrontational." "What is
happening around the country and what is happening in Oklahoma gives me
hope," Coburn told the banquet crowd. "Liberty is being sacrificed for
the sake of expediency." Pratt said Coburn, the chairman of the Second
Amendment caucus in the Senate, was leading the charge to restore
constitutional rights to the states and to the people. "The bill to
repeal the National Park Service gun ban was passed because of Dr.
Coburn," Pratt said.

Can Big Brother's OSHA Pick Be Stopped?: We followed up in yesterdays
discussion about David Michaels, Obama's nominee to head the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration, by looking at past
attempts to frame guns in terms of public health. Exploiting it to
further citizen disarmament is something the academic left, from which
Michaels hails, has been pursuing for years... Just briefly express in
your own words that Michaels' anti-gun and anti-business positions make
him unsuitable for the position of Assistant Secretary for the
Occupational Safety and Health Administration, that you expect them to
show leadership in opposing his confirmation, and that you will inform
those within your sphere of influence about what they do or don't do next...

The Beat Goes On: Data released by the FBI's National Instant Criminal
Background Check System (NICS) reported 966,162 checks in July 2009, an
8.4 percent increase from the 891,224 reported in July 2008. This latest
jump in background checks follows the release of the Firearms and
Ammunition Excise Tax Collection Report by the Department of the
Treasury just two weeks ago. The report noted that firearm and
ammunition manufacturers paid more than $109.8 million in the first
calendar quarter of 2009, up 43 percent over the same period in 2008.

Welcome to Arizona?: I am not yet certain whether I would advocate a
travel boycott by others of the state of Arizona; I want to learn more
about Arizona's gun laws and how they compare with those of other
states. But I am shocked beyond measure by reports that earlier this
week, nearly a dozen persons, including one with an assault rifle
strapped about his shoulders and others with pistols in their hands or
holsters, were openly congregating outside a hall at which President
Obama was speaking to the Veterans of Foreign Wars. For myself, without
yet suggesting that others follow me in an open boycott, I will not
personally travel in a state where civilians carry loaded weapons onto
the sidewalks and as a means of political protest. I not only believe
such practices are a threat to the future of our democracy, but I am
firmly convinced that they would also endanger my own personal safety
there. And therefore I will cancel any plans to vacation or otherwise
visit in Arizona until I learn more. And I will begin thinking about
whether tourists should safeguard themselves by avoiding stays in
Arizona... (I have no problem with hoplophobes visiting Arizona and
supporting our economy but, if you know anyone who is uncomfortable with
the idea of their fellow citizens carrying firearms in public and is
considering moving here, please discourage them from doing so. The
responses to Mr. Frommer are worth reading.)

And Your Point Would Be?: President Obama traveled to Phoenix on Monday
to hold a town hall meeting on health care. Meanwhile, a group of twelve
men gathered outside of the building, carrying guns, such as an AR-15
and a rifle. It seems to me the men are making the statement; "Obama
cannot take our guns away!" The Second Amendment gives Americans the
right to bear arms. Police could not take action on the armed men, as
there is no way to ban their weapons according to law... The event which
took place in Phoenix should open the eyes of all American citizens. We
have no idea who is carrying a gun in their back pocket and what may
possess them to open fire. Keep your eyes open. (So let's worry about
the ones who carry openly or who have submitted to backgrounds checks in
order to be granted a carry permit? I recall one guy with an AR-15 at
the Phoenix demonstration. Even if you call an AR-15 a carbine, it's
still a rifle.)

MSNBC Cropping Provokes Protest: wrote earlier how an MSNBC segment is
drawing heat from conservatives who accuse the network of selectively
cropping an image so as not to show that one of the people carrying guns
at an Obama event was an African-American. Now, Bill Wilson, president
of Americans for Limited Government, is now calling on the network to
fire those responsible for producing the broadcast, in what he describes
as a "nefarious assault on decency."

On behalf of the nearly half million members of Americans for
Limited Government - and tens of millions of other equally appalled
Americans of all races nationwide - I hereby demand the immediate
termination of Contessa Brewer, Toure, Dylan Ratigan and any and all
others involved in any way with the fraudulent "news" that ran in
the 10:45AM segment of your August 18 broadcast.

Wilson sent the letter to NBC News President Steve Capus, and copied GE
chief Jeffrey Immelt and MSNBC president.

More on Florida's Stand-Your-Ground Ruling: ... Firstly, criminals may
act as thought they are "retreating," only to turn around seconds later
and continue their attack.  For example, an armed robber acted as though
he was leaving his victim's barber shop, only to turn around seconds
later and come back to attack again.  In another example, 3 armed
criminals ran away when a woman's home security system went off, but one
of the criminals circled back a few moments later and began to advance
on the woman again.  Criminals, by their very nature, are dishonest.
They are more than willing to fake retreat or surrender in order to lull
the victim into a false sense of security - then attack that victim
again.  It just doesn't make sense to demand that a crime victim risk
their life and trust the criminal's supposed "retreat." ...

Bringing a Beer Can to a Gunfight: Police said a 72-year-old pizza shop
employee foiled a shotgun-point robbery by throwing a can of beer at the
perpetrators. Lancaster police Lt. Todd Umstead said two men with
bandanas over their faces attempted to rob Six Packs on Vine at closing
time Wednesday. One of the men pointed a shotgun at the employee, who
was stocking a cooler. Umstead said the man threw a 12-ounce can of beer
at the robber and both assailants fled the store. Police said the
employee could not tell if the beer struck either of the men but it was
enough to chase them off.

Rule Five Reminder: DeKalb County [GA]Sheriff Thomas Brown's service
revolver was stolen Tuesday from his county-assigned car, police said...
DeKalb County police have no suspects as of yet, but have an eye witness
and video footage from a security camera at the Home Depot on
Lawrenceville Highway in Stone Mountain... Brown said he arrived at the
store at about 10:45 a.m., and went into the store. "I instinctively
slid [my gun] off my belt and placed it in the center console, and armed
the alarm," Brown said. "I didn't want to take it in. I was only going
in for a hot second." Brown said surveillance showed a man follow him to
the entrance of the store, then turn around and return to the unmarked
car. "He jammed some type of tool under the key hole and opened the
door," Brown said. Brown said his staffers, who had been on him about
not wearing his gun, met him at the Home Depot after he reported the
break-in. "They actually came out to the scene specifically to tell me I
should've had my gun," he said. "'What would've happened if I came out,
and he was there with my gun?' they asked me." (Rule Five: Maintain
control of your firearm.)

A Texas sheriff fired one deputy and suspended three others without pay
after a scantily dressed waitress holding a rifle posed for photographs
on the hood of a patrol vehicle. Police said Round Rock officers were
dispatched to a restaurant after someone reported the waitress with the
weapon, which had been given to her by one of the Midland County
deputies who had been attending a training session near Austin. The
incident occurred last week in the parking lot of a Twin Peaks
restaurant, which promotes its "fun, friendly and sometimes flirty
atmosphere!" The deputies told Midland County Sheriff Gary Painter that
they had about three to five beers each. A fifth deputy who remained
inside the eatery got a letter of reprimand. (This sheriff seems to take
Rule Five seriously.)

If You've Got an Hour to Spare...: C-SPAN interviews Richard Feldman,
author of Ricochet: Confessions of a Gun Lobbyist. Feldman makes some
good points, including about the bureaucracy that runs the NRA (even a
broken clock tells the right time twice a day). However, I can't bring
myself to trust this guy and view him as a slicker version of Ray
Schoenke, who shills for the Democratic party under the guise of
American Shooters and Hunters Association. Of note, Feldman completely
ignores the fact that Diane Feinstein has promised to reinstate the
federal ban on military-look-alike firearms at a time of her own
choosing. I won't be spending my money on his book. (This is a video
clip but, there is no need to watch it - you can listen to it while you
conduct business in another window or tab.)

Brownells Releases New Catalog: The newest wishbook of gun goodies and
gunsmithing supplies, Brownells Catalog #62, is now available and it's
bigger than ever. This three pound plus monster has grown to 592 pages,
containing over 30,000 total products, with more than 1,200 that are new
since 2008! Company CEO Frank Brownell said, "The gang in the Catalog
Department took last year's big change and refined it to improve things
even more. The color-coded page edges and clearly divided sections make
it really easy to find just what you're looking for. We're darned
serious about promoting U.S.-made products and U.S. Flag icons have been
added to some products that weren't identified in time for last year's
catalog and included with the new products that qualify." ... (While
Brownells may not offer the cheapest prices, even for those who qualify
for the "coded" FFL price, their encyclopedic catalog offers countless
parts and accessories of which you might not otherwise have been aware.)
