How Soon Will Big Brother Tip His Hand?: Anticipating what Barack Obama
has called "common-sense gun safety laws," the Bush administration has
rushed through a last-minute gun rule that is the antithesis of common
sense. The Interior Department published a rule last week that will
allow loaded, concealed weapons in nearly all of this country's national
parks... We hope that one of the incoming Obama administration's first
steps in bringing common sense to bear will be the reversal of this
absurd and dangerous rule.

Another Pitch to Big Brother: In an editorial published on Sunday
November 30th, 2008 the Columbus Dispatch agitates for "closing" private
sales loophole for gun owners......interesting timing, given a Brady
Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence-issued press release on the same date,
addressing the same topic... The Brady press release, which concludes by
calling for "the Obama Administration and the new Congress to take
effective action to improve public safety by requiring Brady criminal
background checks for all gun sales" (emphasis added) is here...

Do As I Say, Not As I Do: A federal judge in Chicago has ordered
Governor Rod Blagojevich released on his own recognizance after the
Democrat was hit with federal corruption charges... He was released on a
signature bond that specifies that he'll forfeit $4,500 bond if he
doesn't appear in court. Blagojevich also was ordered to relinquish his
passport and his firearm owner's identification car[d]. ("Blago" has
repeatedly tried to force Chicago-style infringements on the rest of the
state.)

Defending Heller from "Faux Conservatism": ...Now George Mason
Univesity's Nelson Lund and the Independence Institute's David Kopel
have written what looks to be a decisive critique of Wilkinson's
article, which they recently made available via the Social Science
Research Network. Here's part of their abstract, which doesn't exactly
pull any punches...

South Carolina Could Drop Permit Requirement: A South Carolina House
member is filing a bill to allow residents to carry weapons without a
permit. Ways and Means Committee Chairman Dan Cooper of Piedmont said
Tuesday he has filed legislation to allow any law-abiding citizen to
carry a weapon. The Republican says concealed weapons permit laws and
other restrictions make it less likely people who obey the law will be
armed and does nothing to disarm people willing to break the law...
(Permits are not required in Vermont or Alaska and a bill for
"Constitutional carry" is likely in Arizona as well.)

Oklahoma Likely to Reconsider Campus Carry: Legislative leaders said
Tuesday it's likely a measure that would allow students to carry
concealed weapons on campus would be taken up again next year despite
their opposition. House Democratic leader Danny Morgan, a member of the
National Rifle Association and a hunter, told members of The State
Chamber that legislators are under political pressure to support the
idea. His opposition to this year's measure resulted in him receiving a
lower grade from the NRA. House Speaker Chris Benge, R-Tulsa, said he
opposed the original bill, but didn't mind a later version that would
have restricted the privilege to military veterans and others with gun
training...

Ohio Needs Restaurant Carry: ...It is time for Ohio to get with the
program. If you are not consuming alcohol, there is absolutely no reason
to blanket prohibit law abiding citizens from being able to protect
themselves. I'm even willing to compromise... bona-fide "bars" can stay
off limits, for now. The legislature removed the ban on "retail
establishments" who happened to be holding events like a wine tasting,
provided you're not drinking, so let's remove the ban on restaurants.
Ohio already has a law against carrying a firearm while legally
intoxicated. Then, after we've proven that Ohio citizens are no less
responsible than citizens of other states, we can talk further...

Prior Settlement Could Scuttle Pittsburgh Ordinance: A 13-year-old
settlement between a gun club and Pittsburgh officials could be a factor
in whether Mayor Luke Ravenstahl vetoes legislation that would penalize
gun owners who don't promptly report lost or stolen weapons. The
Allegheny County Sportsmen's League agreed in 1995 to drop a lawsuit
challenging a city ordinance banning assault weapons in exchange for an
agreement signed by former City Solicitor Howard J. Shulberg. The
agreement says the city would abide by state Act 85, which regulates
firearms...

Arkansas School Shooter Denied CHL: A man who as a child helped gun down
four middle school students and a teacher applied for a concealed-carry
permit under a different name but was denied, police said Wednesday.
Andrew Golden, 22, applied for the permit under the name of Drew Grant,
listing a home address in Evening Shade - only 55 miles from Jonesboro,
where he and classmate Mitchell Johnson lured students into gunfire in
1998 during a fake fire drill, police spokesman Bill Sadler said. Golden
changed his name after his release from prison last year. In a recent
ruling, Craighead County Circuit Judge David Burnett barred lawyers from
releasing Golden's new name or home address. Fingerprints provided with
the concealed-carry permit matched those given by Golden at age 11 in
the aftermath of the shooting, Sadler said....

Oops, Wrong Store: The Catawba County Sheriff's Office said a business
owner shot and killed a suspected robber, and hurt another one. Deputies
said it happened at 3:15 a.m. Saturday. Randy Willis, owner of Willis
Packaging on Highway 10, went to his store because the alarm was going
off. When Willis got there, deputies said he saw a man coming out of his
store with a shotgun. Willis and the robber struggled, and deputies said
Willis pulled out a pistol and shot the robber, killing him. Deputies
said another robber, 52-year-old Arnold Ray Jr., had broken into the
store. Ray jumped Willis, and Willis shot him as well, this time in the
shoulder...

The Truth About Border Violence: Every now and then, the national media
will report on the drug violence plaguing Mexico, and will try to place
the blame on American gun shows or gun owners. But when grenades are
flying through the air in Monterrey, I think it's safe to say the
law-abiding gun owners in the United States aren't to blame... The next
time the national media try to say that Mexico's violence is the fault
of the Second Amendment, ask yourself why some reporters are so eager to
blame U.S. gun owners instead of the people responsible for the drug
trade, the corruption and the violence.

Indian Gun Law Aided Mumbai Terrorists: India's strict gun laws are
partly to blame for the success of the terrorist attack in Mumbai,
according to the head of an Indian gun rights group and a U.S. expert
who has examined the impact of gun laws on crime and terrorism. Abhijeet
Singh, founder of Indians for Guns, told CNSNews.com Tuesday that if the
citizens of Mumbai had been allowed to carry guns, terrorists would not
have killed as many people as they did--and might have been deterred
from attacking in the first place...

Tempest in an English Teacup: When the parcel arrived by courier,
grandmother Catherine Roots prepared to unwrap the horse harness she had
been eagerly awaiting. Instead, she was left shocked and frightened by
the contents, fearing she had been caught up in some gangland arms deal.
The box contained a Heckler and Koch assault rifle, which was supposed
to have gone to a police headquarters two miles away... Dorset police,
who have apologised several times, assured Mrs Roots that it could not
fire bullets. It had been converted to produce an infrared beam for
training exercises at their headquarters in Winfrith, near Dorchester...

British Police Employee Sues Over Negligent Shooting: A police civilian
worker who was shot with a Dirty Harry-style Magnum during a safety
demonstration is suing the force for 300,000 damages. Keith Tilbury,
51, a control-room operator, was injured after a police marksman's gun
went off accidentally. Mr Tilbury was one of a dozen staff sitting in a
semi-circle around PC David Micklethwaite. The constable was giving a
lecture to employees and showing the kind of weapons police officers can
come up against. While he was demonstrating the Smith & Wesson .44
Magnum, the gun used by Clint Eastwood in the Dirty Harry movies, it
suddenly went off. Civilian Mr Tilbury was blown off his chair and
thrown half way across the room... (It sounds as though they may have
different physics in England if a gunshot can blow someone off his chair
and halfway across the room. It would appear that Rule One and Rule Two
don't carry much weight with the Bobbies.)

From GOA: ...Once Barack Obama takes his oath of office in January, he
will become, without a doubt, the most anti-gun President this nation
has ever seen. How are gun owners responding to the oncoming Obama
presidency? By the tens of thousands, they are pouring into gun stores
all across the country and stocking up on guns and ammo, fearing the
worst. Many buyers include first-time gun owners. And while that is not
a bad idea, it's a short term solution to a long-term problem that does
nothing to defend our Second Amendment rights from being eliminated by a
Congress controlled by people like Ted Kennedy, Chuck Schumer, Carolyn
McCarthy and other notorious gun grabbers...
