Commercial Plug: As we start the traditional holiday shopping season,
you may wish to consider my book as a gift, to give or to request.
According to one reviewer, "Whether you are a grizzled big city cop or a
soccer mom who is contemplating purchasing a firearm for self-defense,
you'll want to own Defensive Use of Firearms." In particular, with so
many new gun owners racing to beat Big Brother's attempts to eradicate
the RKBA, there may be someone you know who would particularly benefit
from reading this book.

Chicago Defies the Second Amendment: ...When it comes to firearms,
Chicago Mayor Richard Daley is no slave to rationality. "Does this lead
to everyone having a gun in our society?" he demanded after the ruling
came down. "Then why don't we do away with the court system and go back
to the Old West, where you have a gun and I have a gun and we'll settle
it in the streets?" From listening to him, you might assume that the
only places in North America that don't have firefights on a daily basis
are cities that outlaw handguns. You might also assume that Chicago is
an oasis of concord, rather than the site of 443 homicides last year...
(Mayor Daley, among other things, confuses the Hollywood West with
actual history - very few disputes were settled with guns in the street.)

Another "Hunter" Offers His Opinion: The extreme gun nuts, who think the
Bill of Rights is limited to the Second Amendment, are panicked that a
Barack Obama administration is going to take their firearms rights away.
And the ignorant idealists who see guns as the root of all evil are
hoping he will. That's not going to happen, although Obama might throw a
sop to the idealists by pushing for some changes that will have no
effect on 99% of the people who own guns. Most of the idealists don't
know what they are talking about. They don't know anything about guns
nor how hopelessly ineffective gun laws are at curbing crime and gun
violence... (Why do I get the impression that he's setting us up for a
ban on Evil Black Rifles?)

New York Bill to Serialize Bullets: Used to be whenever a downstate
Assembly Democrat wrote legislation proposing a tax and/or severe
restriction on the manufacture and sale of ammunition, it caused a
ripple among the hunters and gun owners, but that quickly subsided.
Everyone knew that radical measures involving ammunition and firearms
were largely penned for effect in the Metropolitan area and that the
Senate wasn't about to allow companion bills out of committee. "Used to
be" is the operative phrase here. New York's whole political and
legislative landscape changed earlier this month and now the liberal and
radically anti-gun, anti-hunting, etc. fervor that once thrived only in
the Assembly now flows freely in those seats across the aisle...

Ohio Bill to Expand RKBA: The Senate Judiciary on Criminal Justice
Committee, chaired by Sen. Tim Grendell (R-18), will hear proponent,
opponent and interested party testimony on Rep. Bruce Goodwin's HB450,
legislation that would restore gun rights to members of the armed
services or the Ohio National Guard who are between the ages of 18 and
21, on Wednesday, December 3 at 10:00 a.m. in the Senate Building's
Finance Hearing Room...

Vermont Deadly-Force Law: The issue of self-defense came up this week
when a North Hero man shot at a burglar inside his home. No one was
hurt, but there is plenty of legal precedence for justifiable shootings
in self-defense. "I said, 'listen I am going to shoot you if you don't
produce some hands right now,'" said Jim Melanson, who was packing a
pistol when he surprised a burglar in his home this week. Melanson did
fire two shots, but he missed the thief who then escaped unharmed out a
back window. Reporter Brian Joyce: You shot to miss? ... (Warning shots
are not recommended.)

Oops, Wrong House, Georgia Version: On Wednesday, November 19th, 20-
year-old Roderick Manigault was shot and later arrested in a failed home
burglary attempt. Glynn County homeowner James Detloff was home when
Manigault entered the house. Manigault was in the process of stealing a
rifle when he pointed it at Detloff. The homeowner was armed with a .32
caliber handgun and shot Manigault twice. As the homeowner left the room
to call 911, Manigault fled the home on foot...

Oops, Wrong House, North Carolina Version: A would-be burglar who'd been
scared off from one house by a 70-year-old woman found himself a few
minutes later staring down the wrong end of a shotgun at another, police
say. And before the sun rose Sunday, Joshuah Scott Rutledge probably
figured out that this northern Gaston County town wasn't ripe for the
picking... But once inside he found himself staring at Richard Osborne
and an old shotgun that his wife's grandfather had once used to
slaughter hogs. Whether the gun would still fire a shot remains in
question... (Perhaps Osborne should get a firearm that will not only
fire but will do so with no danger to the shooter.)

Oops, Wrong Old Lady: A frail pensioner fought off two violent muggers
with her walking stick as they tried to snatch her handbag. Margaret
Stewart, 67, lashed out, clobbering her attackers over the head and
sending them fleeing empty handed. The two men attacked her as she
returned to her home in North Shields, North Tyneside, after visiting a
friend in hospital... (Word is still pending as to whether British
authorities will charge her with using excessive force.)

Burglars Hit Arizona Gun Store: Four rifles were stolen early Thursday
morning during a smash-and-grab burglary of a gun shop, a Tempe police
spokesman said. A witness saw two men drive a vehicle into the front
window of Arizona Tactical, 1809 E. Baseline Road, about 4:30 a.m., then
leave a few minutes later in a different vehicle. The first vehicle was
stolen. Police spokesman Brandon Banks said investigators may have to
rely on surveillance videos from cameras inside the store for more
clues, because the witness was not able to provide much detailed
information. "They were able to tell it was two men and they got into a
passenger car, but that was about it," Banks said.

Tangentially Related: Whatever group lies behind the attacks in Mumbai,
security experts say one thing has been made abundantly clear: a massive
city can be reduced to mayhem if a group of men is well-enough armed and
prepared to die... Security specialists say the attack was probably
months in the planning and appears to have been finely tuned in its
execution, but it ultimately relied on only an estimated 25 gunmen
lightly armed with assault rifles and hand-grenades...Such an assault
might be mounted virtually anywhere in the world, he said, making cities
in Europe and the United States vulnerable, even if such an outcome
remains unlikely...
