Pennsylvania Soccer Mom Seeks $1 Million for Revoked CWP: A Lebanon
woman yesterday sued a county sheriff who revoked her concealed-weapons
permit after she upset fellow parents by wearing her holstered pistol to
her 5-year-old daughter's soccer game. Meleanie Hain alleges in a suit
filed in a Harrisburg federal court that Lebanon County Sheriff Michael
DeLeo violated her Second Amendment right to carry a gun and prosecuted
her maliciously when he took away her permit in September. Hain was
joined in the lawsuit by her husband, Scott, who contends that he has
lost his wife's "companionship, consortium, society and services" as a
result of the harm she has suffered. They are seeking a judgment in
excess of $1 million to cover damages that include emotional distress
and financial injury for Hain's lost income and attorney fees...

Pittsburgh Passes Stolen-Gun Ordinance: Pittsburgh City Council gave its
first approval today to legislation requiring that anyone report a lost
or stolen firearm report that within 24 hours or potentially face a $500
fine. The 6-1 vote, with two abstentions, sets up a final vote likely
next week, which would send the legislation to Mayor Luke Ravenstahl for
his signature or veto, and then potentially to the courts, where similar
measures have been challenged. "Who really cares about it being
unconstitutional?" said Councilwoman Tonya Payne, a supporter. "This is
what's right to do, and if this means that we have to go out and have a
court battle, then that's fine ... We have plenty of dead bodies coming
up in our streets every single day, and that is unacceptable." ...

Easton Rejects Stolen-Gun Ordinance: City council resoundingly defeated
a measure Tuesday that would have required the owners of lost or stolen
handguns to report the missing firearms to police... Despite a legal
opinion from the city solicitor that the law would prove indefensible in
court, the mayor pressed on Tuesday with the vote. Panto even said the
city wouldn't pay to defend the law should someone challenge it... The
Pennsylvania Constitution gives the power to regulate legal firearms to
the state, Panto said, arguing a stolen handgun is considered illegal...

Georgia County Rejects Proposed Ordinance: Madison County commissioners
voted 4-1 Monday night not to enact an ordinance that would have
prohibited residents from firing a weapon within 300 feet of a home in
the unincorporated areas of the county. At least 100 county residents,
many of them wearing anti-gun-control stickers, attended the meeting to
protest the ordinance. The crowd forced commissioners to move the
meeting to the county's courtroom, which still did not accommodate
everyone. Commissioners would violate not only the Second Amendment, but
also the rights of property owners if they approved the firearms
ordinance, residents said...

Disarming the Obama Administration: Every president-elect vets his
incoming staff and usually that vetting begins with a lengthy
questionnaire. But one question asked on Barack Obama's questionnaire is
raising hackles among gun owners and fans of the Second Amendment.
Question No. 59 begins: "Do you or any members of your immediate family
own a gun?" ...Then again, maybe Team Obama is just checking for recent
receipts so it won't be embarrassed by the discovery that one of its
appointees is among the hordes of shoppers who have lately rushed to
Wal-Mart to scoop up guns since Mr. Obama was elected.

A British View of the Run on Guns: ...It is not quite what Mr Obama
meant by change, or indeed economic stimulus from the extra sales of
weapons and courses, but it is one of the more revealing responses to
his victory which the last few weeks have brought. It is a reminder that
Barack Obama's win was not just a victory of optimism and energy over
age and staleness, it was also a victory across a cultural divide, of
one sort of America over another. A gun-lovin', largely rural and
conservative vision of the US was clearly defeated by a brand of big
city liberalism which fears or despises firearms and wants to do
something about America's love affair with them...

Rule Five Issue?: A German man who slept with a loaded revolver under
his pillow has lost his gun license after a court ruled it to be
irresponsible behavior. The 56-year-old was stripped of his license for
failing to store the weapon properly, Braunschweig administrative court
judge Torsten Baumgarten told Reuters Tuesday. The gun was only
discovered by chance during a police inspection... Baumgarten said the
ruling, which sets a legal precedent in Germany, in effect outlaws
sleeping on top of a firearm - because the owner of the gun is not in
control of the weapon and is therefore putting himself and others at
risk... (Rule Five: Maintain control of your firearm. It's hard to see
how someone could steal a firearm under your pillow while you are
sleeping but leaving it there, to be found by police, would also let it
be found by a burglar. While I know of a few cases where a handgun under
the pillow proved to be a lifesaver, I also know of one case in which a
gun owner fired such a pistol while asleep.)

Ireland Prepares to Ban Handguns: The Minister for Justice, Equality and
Law Reform, Mr. Dermot Ahern, T.D. today outlined his proposals to ban
licensed handguns. The issue was raised some weeks back by Waterford
Fine Gael Deputy, John Deasy who highlighted the huge increase in
handguns legally held in Ireland over the past number of years. He
pointed to the inconsistency in the numbers of handguns across various
Garda divisions throughout the country. The Minister said the handgun
ban would be included in legislation currently being prepared which will
be published shortly. Minister Ahern said: "Since being appointed, I
have made clear my growing concern at the number and type of handguns
being licensed..."
