Brady Bunch Endorses Obama-Biden: ... "Senators Barack Obama and Joseph
Biden know that we make it too easy for dangerous people to get
dangerous weapons in this country. They know that our weak gun laws have
too many loopholes, which lead to over 30,000 deaths and 70,000 injuries
from guns every year. Senators Obama and Biden know that we can reduce
those deaths and injuries from guns by strengthening our Brady
background check system, getting military-style assault weapons off our
streets, and giving law enforcement more tools to stop the trafficking
of illegal guns...The difference between the two tickets is clearest
with regard to assault weapons. Senator Obama made his position clear in
his acceptance speech in Denver when he said "the reality of gun
ownership may be different for hunters in rural Ohio than they are for
those plagued by gang violence in Cleveland, but don't tell me we can't
uphold the Second Amendment while keeping AK-47s out of the hands of
criminals." And Senator Biden helped get a ban on assault weapons passed
in 1994 and fought for its renewal in 2004..."

CCRKBA Challenges Obama to Reject Brady Endorsement: If Democrat Barack
Obama truly supports gun rights and the Second Amendment, he should
immediately repudiate and reject today's endorsement by the anti-gun
Brady Campaign, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear
Arms said. "By accepting an endorsement from the nation's leading gun
ban organization," said CCRKBA Legislative Affairs Director Joe Waldron,
"Barack Obama would be declaring to every gun owner in America that he
has lied to them all these months during the presidential campaign. If
he accepts this endorsement, Obama may as well spit on the Second
Amendment..."

And the Beat Goes On...: Many of America's best-armed criminals call
Orlando and the rest of Florida home. AK-47s, other military-style
assault weapons and expensive handguns have become so common that cops
across the state routinely encounter suspects equipped for urban
warfare, complete with 75-shot magazines and bulletproof vests. In
Orange County alone, the number of crime guns seized last year - 3,333 -
was only 500 weapons fewer than the total seized in all five boroughs of
New York City, which has eight times the population...

Heller Fee Dispute Heats Up: Dick Heller of  D.C. v. Heller fame has his
gun permit, but his lawyers - the ones who successfully argued for his
individual right to keep and bear arms - are still trying to pry their
fees from the District of Columbia. Initially, both sides expressed a
hope that the matter could be settled out of court, but discussions
quickly unraveled...After negotiations between the parties collapsed in
September, the District filed an opposition brief, complaining that the
$3.6 million request was "highly unreasonable." The city proposed
$798,232 in fees and $9,480 in litigation costs. Acting D.C. Attorney
General Peter Nickles conceded the victory was "significant" and that
the attorneys' performance was "above-average," but he said a fee
enhancement was unwarranted because the Heller team succeeded on proven
legal theories - rather than novel ones - and with the help of nearly 50
amicus briefs from various states and members of Congress. Nickles
accused the team of "over-preparation" and of larding its bill with
hours from minor and unsuccessful motions. He also pointed out that
three of the seven attorneys on the Heller team did not keep time
records, meaning Judge Sullivan would have to rely on the "self-serving
recollections of counsel years after the fact..."

Confirmation of BATFE Director Still Blocked: For more than two years,
U.S. Attorney Michael Sullivan has been consumed by the latest entry on
his resume: acting chief of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco,
Firearms and Explosives. The Republican has been balancing both jobs
while dealing with opposition to his ATF confirmation from members of
his own party in the Senate. Now, with the presidential election a month
away and Congress adjourned, Sullivan, 54, could soon end up
unemployed...None of the senators holding up Sullivan's confirmation
returned calls seeking comment. They include Republican Sens. Larry
Craig and Mike Crapo, both of Idaho, and David Vitter of Louisiana. The
opposition is not to Sullivan personally, but focused on the belief that
the ATF is overly aggressive in enforcing gun laws...

14 Illinois Counties Will Offer CCW Referendum: Voters in 14 Illinois
counties will have a chance next month to let Springfield know what they
think about citizens' right to carry concealed firearms. The referendum
will ask whether the state should enact so-called "concealed-carry"
legislation. The referendum is advisory only. Voters will not be
deciding whether individual counties should adopt those rights, but
whether state legislators should bring the issue to a vote. Advocates of
the legislation say such a law is long overdue in Illinois, which is one
of only two states that haven't passed some form of the statute.

More on California CWP Refusals: Some 146 Orange County residents with
permits to carry concealed weapons have been told they do not meet new
criteria to have their permits renewed, a sheriff's captain said Friday.
The Orange County Sheriff's Department is reviewing a list of 1,024
people with the permits and has completed names beginning with letters A
through L, said sheriff's Capt. Dave Nighswonger. The notices give the
permit-holders 30 days to provide more information that might persuade
authorities they should be allowed to carry concealed weapons,
Nighswonger said...Nighswonger said that several of the permittees
notified have submitted additional information, but some did not meet
the new requirements. Some people cited Second Amendment rights, or
indicated they are avid shooters and carry weapons frequently to firing
ranges. Neither of those reasons meet the requirements, Nighswonger
said. "It really comes down to a credible substantial risk to safety,"
Nighswonger said. (It appears that Orange County is now mimicking L.A.
County's standards for issuance.)

One-Gun-a-Month Bill Pending in New Jersey: Frank Caso has sold handguns
and rifles from his Caso's Gun-A-Rama store for 40 years. But for about
six months in 2006, Mr. Caso was barred by a city ordinance from selling
each customer more than one handgun a month. Two weeks ago, he won a
legal victory when a State Appellate Court panel affirmed a lower court
ruling that tossed out the Jersey City ordinance. Mr. Caso's legal
victory, however, may be short lived. A bill that would limit gun buyers
to one handgun a month passed the State Assembly in June and is now
awaiting a hearing in the State Senate...
