Ohio Gun Owners to Protest Harassment: Ohioans For Concealed Carry plans
to hold a demonstration walk Sept. 20 in Northwood in protest of what
the organization says was poor treatment of one of its members by city
police. The walk is scheduled for noon at Central Park. The group claims
one of its members, Edwin Farbrother, was harassed by police officers
July 5 while he was at a Woodville Road ice cream shop with his
18-year-old daughter. Police Chief Thomas Cairl was at the shop at the
time with his family and called on-duty officers when he saw Mr.
Farbrother wearing a holstered weapon the chief says was about "85
percent covered" by a vest. A press release issued by OFCC says police
berated Mr. Farbrother for carrying a gun where children were present
and told him he was "breaking the law by carrying his firearm openly..."

Utah Gun Owners Target Illegal Bans: A pro-gun rights group wants to
stop what it says are "petty bureaucrats" from banning guns in their
local jurisdictions - an act they say is against state law. The
independent gun rights network Gun Owners of Utah is calling on its
members to look for signs at places such as airports, buses and local
parks banning guns. After a list of such signs is compiled, members from
GOUtah! will ask local leaders to take the signs down and revise their
rules and ordinances...

SDS vs. SCCC, Point, Counterpoint: ...The answer to gun violence is not
more guns. The victims of Columbine and Virginia Tech were not killed
because they were unarmed. They were killed because a few troubled young
men slipped through the cracks of society and were driven to violence.
Allowing students on campus to carry firearms would not make such
troubled individuals less violent... ...SCCC advocates concealed carry
on campus for personal protection by licensed adults over the age of 21.
We have never stated that we do not intend to use our weapons, as the
reason we carry them is in the extreme event that we would need to use
them...

Texas Unsafe for Burglars: Last week there were two shootings, one in
San Antonio and the other in Fort Worth, which resulted in the deaths of
home intruders. In San Antonio, it was the second incident in less than
five months. In April a homeowner killed an 18-year-old man breaking
into his house. And in December, a Houston man shot to death a man who
broke into his home in the middle of the night. However, although said
shootings got lots of attention in those cities, the publicity was
minimal compared to another Houston area case. Last November, Joe Horn,
a 61-year-old Pasadena resident, shot to death two men who burglarized
his neighbor's home -in broad daylight and even after a 911 dispatcher
who had been called by Horn to report the burglary told him not to shoot
the burglars because he was inside his home and not in any danger...

Pre-Election Reading: ...The second was an important new book which
recently came to my desk, "These Dogs Don't Hunt." Co-authored by Second
Amendment Foundation founder Alan Gottlieb and noted gun writer Dave
Workman, the book is a scathing and significant look at a number of
prominent politicians and their anti-gun rights views. Well-written and
carefully documented, it is particularly timely (and no doubt
consciously timed for) a presidential election year. I will not attempt
to delve into its contents in detail. Suffice it to say the book gives
insightful coverage, as its subtitle suggests on "The Democrats' War on
Guns." It should be must reading for any hunter, shooter or gun
collector, because its pages contain some information which is as
troubling as it is sobering...A good starting point for general
understanding and perspective is Les Adams' "The Second Amendment
Primer." Written by a lawyer with all of the meticulous research and
background digging you would expect, it doesn't exactly merit "page
turner" status but should be a "must read" for anyone seeking an
in-depth understanding of how the Second Amendment fits into American
history...

Some Biden History: ... Biden's "Assault Weapons Ban" is one of the
biggest frauds ever perpetrated on the American people. The bill bans
the manufacture of guns with certain cosmetic features. But, because it
doesn't ban the sale or possession of anything, it didn't take a single
gun off the street. And, during the year before the ban, so many of the
"dreaded AK-47" style semi-auto rifles were imported that the market was
flooded, prices fell by over 50 percent, and hundreds of thousands of
guns were sold. Ten years after the ban the guns were still readily
available in any gun store in the country for less than they cost in
1993. And to pour salt in the wound Biden is currently sponsoring yet
another ban on semi-auto firearms...

Sarah Palin - Hunter (and More): ...Sarah's dad Chuck Heath shot a
grizzly bear three years ago and its skin adorns a sofa in Sarah's
office. Now she is in the political bear pit after accepting the
Republican Vice-Presidential nomination..."She started shooting a gun
when she was eight and shot her first animal when she was ten. It was
something small, possibly a rabbit. She is a really good shot. I taught
her to shoot a moose and dress it, to fish and hunt for game. We raised
our family to be able to support ourselves - 90 per cent of our meat and
fish we get ourselves..." (Interesting article by a British reporter.)

New York Club Offers Women-Only Course: ...The Genesee Conservation
League held a basic pistol class for women only. The National Rifle
Association sponsored the class.  The goal was to teach women about gun
safety and how to use a pistol the right way. Dave Jenkins, an NRA
certified instructor says it's just as important for women to know how
to handle a gun as it is men. "I've come up with the fact that women
need to know self defense just as much as men do. Pistol safety in
general is a good idea, because there are people out there that don't
know how to handle a fire arm safely" Jenkins explains. This class has
been taught before but the "women only" portion is new.

How One Woman Became a Shooter: Last Saturday, I realized something: I
have become a shooter. Not a very good shooter, but a shooter
nonetheless... That was when I took the American Legion Shooting Sports
class offered at the community building here in Siloam Springs. When Mom
announced that I was to take the class, I balked. Yes, my father is a
self-proclaimed "card-carrying member of the NRA. "Yes, I wholeheartedly
support the protection of our Second Amendment rights. No I do not want
to go and learn how to shoot guns. But go I did. I am deeply indebted to
the Legionnaires who accepted the task of transforming several kids
ignorant of firearms into capable, or at least competent, marksmen...

A LEOSA Success Story: An off-duty, out-of-town police officer may have
saved the life of a Boise man in Orem this morning. After the man from
Boise finished breakfast with his girlfriend at the IHOP on 850 W.
University Parkway, he was attacked by a man with a scissors. Orem
police say for no reason at all, a complete stranger approached the
couple in the IHOP parking lot and started stabbing the man. He fell,
and the attacker jumped on him and kept stabbing him in his face, neck
and arm. It would've kept going, but a Chicago police officer in Utah
for training was at the front door of the restaurant and saw it all
happen. He tried to break it up, but the attacker went to stab the Boise
man again. So, the Chicago officer shot him...

Canada Greens Play Catch-Up on Gun Bans: It's a rare day when
journalists influence political platforms, all the more so when it's
apparently by chance. That's what happened when a Star reporter this
week asked Green Party Leader Elizabeth May about her gun control
proposals. Why is the Green Party more tolerant of semi-automatic
weapons than the Liberals? The Liberals, the reporter noted, want to ban
them outright; the Greens want to ban them only in "urban centres,"
according to the Vision Green platform on their website. May was
shocked. She insisted the Greens also want to ban them everywhere. And
then she checked the website. "Oh, it does say in urban centres. I don't
know why it says that," she said. "It's a mistake..."
