Brady Bunch Alleges That Arming Texas Teachers May Violate State Law: In
response to recent reports that a small 110-student school district in
north Texas allows school staff to be armed without being licensed by
the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement Officer Standards and Education,
the Brady Center to Prevent Gun Violence has released an analysis
indicating that such policies apparently violate Texas law..."An
analysis by the Brady Center Legal Action Project (attached) shows that
the Harrold Independent School District's plan to arm staff and teachers
without being properly licensed does not appear to comply with Texas
law," Helmke said.. (I suspect that making an issue of this will only
result in the Texas legislature loosening the restrictions on legally
possessed firearms on Texas schoolgrounds.)

California May Further Restrict Vehicle Carry: ...With less than two
weeks left to act on legislation, the state Senate sent dozens of bills
to the governor, including a measure sought by Los Angeles County
Sheriff Lee Baca to outlaw the carrying of loaded firearms in vehicles
in unincorporated areas of the county. "I think all of us are aware of
the dangers of a loaded firearm in a vehicle," said state Sen. Jack
Scott (D-Altadena), who wrote SB 1171 at Baca's request. Scott noted
that loaded guns in vehicles within city limits are already illegal.
"This will simply close that loophole," Scott said...

Bill Would Limit FFL Transfers: Paul Helmke, President of the Brady
Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, praised a bill introduced by
Representative Mark Kirk (R-IL) that closes the gun "fire sale"
loophole.  This loophole allows gun dealers to sell off their inventory
without background checks after having their federal firearms licenses
revoked.  H.R. 6664 would limit gun dealers from transferring firearms
after their licenses are revoked or a renewal is denied...Currently, if
a gun dealer's federal firearms license is revoked for violating federal
law, the dealer is allowed to transfer any guns remaining in the store's
inventory to the dealer's personal "private" collection.  The dealer is
then considered a "private seller" and can transfer firearms without
performing Brady background checks, thus allowing convicted felons,
domestic violence abusers, and those who are dangerously mentally ill to
easily obtain guns... (I believe that there is a limit to the number of
personally owned firearms one can sell in a year without incurring the
liability of engaging in business without a license. Most "fire sales,"
as I understand it, end up being to other licensed dealers.)

Boston Billboard Attacks Gun Shows: The gun-control activist whose
provocative billboards have been turning heads along the Massachusetts
Turnpike for 13 years today will unveil one of his most eye-popping
messages yet - a fake neon advertisement for American gun shows where
people can buy weapons, no questions asked. "We Sell Guns! No ID
required. No background checks. Criminals and terrorists welcome!" the
billboard peals. "Gun shows are the equivalent of Al Qaeda terrorists
walking directly onto the airplane while you and I wait in the TSA
line," John Rosenthal, founder and chairman of Stop Handgun Violence,
said in a recent interview. "They don't want us to go on airplanes but
they let Al Qaeda buy guns unprotected..." (Not mentioned is that John
Rosenthal is also president of the phony American Hunters and Shooters
Association.)

With Sheriffs Candidates Like These...: Broward sheriff candidate Scott
Israel drew some stares at a candidate forum at a Deerfield Beach
clubhouse last week when he showed up wearing a gun and police uniform.
Bernie Parness, president of the Deerfield Beach Democratic Club, said
he asked Israel to remove his gun after other candidates complained.
''They were uncomfortable that he was wearing a gun on the stage,''
Parness said. 'He said, `I am an officer in uniform.' I reminded him not
in Broward County.'' Israel, on leave from his job as police chief in
North Bay Village, said he didn't remove his gun. ''I was a police
officer in full uniform,'' he said...

Tragic if True: The way Chris Burdon's family sees it, police killed an
innocent man May 12 for no good reason. Burdon, 39, a diabetic since age
8, was apparently suffering from low blood sugar when he fired his
handgun - three quick shots - to get help, the family says. The police
say they shot a man who was waving a gun, pointing it at officers and
refusing to follow their commands. Family members say they believe that
because of the area of town where he was shot - Grant and Oracle roads -
and the way Burdon was acting, people will think the police killed a
drunken criminal who was shooting up the neighborhood...

Florida Road-Rage Killing - No Gun Involved: A Central Florida man was
in custody after going on a rampage after a fender-bender, slashing and
stabbing a young couple and then running over and killing a woman, the
authorities said on Tuesday. The man, Casey W. Till, 26, of Haines City,
faces murder and carjacking charges after the attacks on Sunday on
family members traveling in two vehicles. The Polk County Sheriff's
Office tracked Mr. Till to his home through a pill bottle at the scene.
Mr. Till told the police that he was high on crack at the time of the
attacks, officials said... (Opponents of CCW often argue that it will
lead fender-benders to turn bloody. Would this incident have not ended
better if one of the victims had been able to shoot the assailant?)

Oops, Wrong House: A family fought back against a group of armed
intruders that broke into a Kansas City, Kan., home early Friday
morning, police said. Police received a 911 call from a house near North
74th Court and Oakland Avenue just after midnight. A man who lives in
the house said when the men burst into the house, his son was able to
escape and get help while he and his brother were held at gunpoint.
"These guys had us in there for about 20 minutes. One of them came
outside and tried to get in my Escalade. When that guy went outside, my
brother, who was here with me, jumped up and grabbed the gun from him. I
went downstairs and grabbed my gun, and the shootout was on after that,"
the man said. Two of the alleged intruders were wounded in the
shooting... (This is why many of us keep guns on our persons, even when
we are inside our homes.)

Oops, Wrong Trailer Park: Minot Police were called to this RV park just
after 10:00 last night, August 14, for reports of gun shots fired. When
they arrived they found 42-year old Jonnie Guerrero with three gunshots
wounds to his leg. Shortly thereafter they also found a female and two
males sitting outside a nearby trailer. "The female had a gun in her
possession and she admitted to using it on the victim who we had found,"
says Detective Jason Sundbakken, Minot Police Department. Police say the
group had been sitting outside when Guerrero approached them and started
causing problems leading to a fight that eventually turned physical.
"The altercation blossomed into the gun shot victim brining a large
metal pipe of some kind, allegedly, and swinging it at this lady`s
husband. She was in fear of his life and therefore she took the gun she
had in her pocket out and fired four rounds," says Det. Sundbakken. The
gun was a .22 caliber derringer pistol. It had been given to her by her
husband for safety. It holds two shots. She fired four. She shot twice,
reloaded and shot two more times. (Need we discuss the value of a
two-shot .22 derringer compared to other possible choices? It beats a
pocketful of rocks but not by much.)
