One More Chicago Suburb Amends Handgun Ban: Following on the heels of a
Supreme Court decision that held that a blanket ban on handguns violated
2nd Amendment rights, Evanston's City Council voted 7-1 Monday night to
amend the North Shore suburb's weapons ordinance to conform to the
landmark court ruling. Council members believe the move will allow the
city to avoid a potential court challenge. "I find the Supreme Court
decision repugnant," said Ald. Steve Bernstein (4th). "But because of
it, it's the law. In the short term, we'll be better off getting [the
ordinance] off the books..."

.. The Evanston ordinance approved Monday states that "no person shall
possess ... any handgun except when said handgun is kept at the
residence ... for self-protection." The owner must possess a current and
valid Firearm Owner's Identification card from the state. Persons under
18 are prohibited from possessing a gun small enough to be concealed on
one's person. Certain persons cannot possess a gun under any
circumstances. The all-out ban applies to drug addicts; mentally ill
persons hospitalized within the past five years; mentally retarded
individuals, and persons under 21 convicted of a misdemeanor, other than
a traffic offense.

From CCRKBA: The 2008 Democratic Party's draft platform confirms that
the party still "doesn't get it" about Second Amendment gun rights
versus the Utopian fantasy that gun control laws will somehow make
neighborhoods safer, the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and
Bear Arms said today. "While promising to preserve our Second Amendment
rights," said CCRKBA Chairman Alan Gottlieb, "the party platform
demonizes semiautomatic sport utility rifles and wants them banned,
calls for anti-gun show legislation and proposes so-called
'common-sense' gun laws. Many Democrats believe bans on most guns are
'common sense' and they still support the handgun ban in Barack Obama's
hometown of Chicago. Boiled down, all it really means is that the
Democrats are still the party of gun control no matter how they try to
re-package the rhetoric, and they know it..."

Muddying the Waters in Montana: Governor Brian Schweitzer said he does
not think Republican John McCain has an advantage over Barack Obama with
gun voters. Schweitzer, who hangs a gun on his wall even though there is
an ordinance banning firearms in public buildings, said die-hard gun
voters will likely take a dim view of both presidential candidates. But
the Democratic governor said he thinks Obama might have an advantage
with hunters because he has talked more about preserving public lands.
Schweitzer's comments came during a Tuesday conference call arranged by
Obama's Montana campaign...

Brady Bunch Would Outlaw Autoloading Shotguns: ...On Sunday July 27,
2008 a disturbed man identified as Jim D. Adkisson entered the Tennessee
Valley Unitarian Church in Knoxville Tennessee firing three shots
resulting in two deaths, wounding seven others before being tackled and
held until the police arrived. The murder used an upland hunting gun, a
Remington Model 48 semi-automatic shotgun. This is what has the Brady
Center trembling with fear and outrage, the dreaded semi-automatic
"assault weapon." Never one to let any tragedy go by without attempting
to capitalizing on it, they hurriedly published a news release stating
that "The shooter used a Remington Model 48 that can fire three shells
at a time." Apparently they confused ammunition capacity with number of
shots fired per trigger pull. They have since corrected their error
after numerous pro-gun bloggers noticed and ridiculed their mistake.
They apparently are as clueless about hunting firearms as they are with
military styled firearms...

Philadelphia Sets Fine for Not Reporting Lost Gun: A new ordinance
taking effect Saturday in Philadelphia is intended to crack down on
irresponsible gun owners. Citizens who fail to report a lost or stolen
firearm within 24 hours can now be fined up to $1,900. Repeat offenders
will face another steep fine or 90 days in jail. The strict penalties
are part of the Lost or Stolen Firearm Ordinance, one of the three
surviving pieces of gun legislation that Mayor Michael Nutter signed
into law in April. A judge blocked two more aggressive laws Nutter
signed that would have instituted a one-gun-per-month limit and an
assault-weapons ban.

While in Baltimore...: Gun owners in Baltimore whose firearms are stolen
would be required to report the theft to police under legislation
approved by the City Council yesterday - despite questions about whether
the proposal is legal. Supporters, including Mayor Sheila Dixon, say the
bill will help police track stolen weapons used in crimes, but the
city's law department has questioned whether Baltimore can legislate gun
control, typically a state issue. In a June memo on the bill, the law
department recommended the City Council hold off on advancing the
measure until the Maryland attorney general issues an opinion on the
bill - but that opinion is not finished...

FedEx Employee Charged with Gun Thefts: A FedEx cargo handler stole 146
handguns from the Monmouth County facility where he worked and enlisted
a friend to help sell the weapons at public housing projects in Jersey
City and on the streets of Newark and East Orange, federal investigators
said Tuesday. The scheme began to fall apart when frustrated residents
complained to Jersey City police, who then used a sting operation to
capture the suspects, authorities said. Federal agents are now trying to
trace dozens of the stolen weapons, many of which they said were sold
for between $300 and $500 each or traded for drugs...

Oops, Wrong Pizzeria: ... Manny Manolas, 41, told police that he and
Clary Manolas, 63, were closing up Manny's Pizza at 487 S. Nova Road at
about 11:40 p.m. Sunday when a man wearing a towel or a T-shirt over his
head emerged from the bushes near Manolas' car, according to a report.
The stranger brandished a gun and said, "Give me the bag and your
money," according to the report. But Manolas wasn't about to surrender
his cash and his receipts. He pulled out his own weapon, a .357 magnum
revolver, and shot at the man, who ran toward a furniture store nearby,
the report shows... (It sounds as though Manny could use a bit more
training on the range.)

Failing to Take a Gun to a Bear Fight: A hike in the Smokies turns into
a fight against a black bear for a Florida father and his eight-year-old
son. Eight-year-old Evan Pala was taking a picture of his father and
brother on a log in Le Conte Creek, when, out of nowhere, a black bear
attacked. Evan says, "Right behind a tree, it popped out on two feet,
just the bear jumped on me...It was holding me to the ground, and it
pushed my teeth right into the rock." All of a sudden, a fun family
hiking trip turned into a fight for life for John Pala, and his sons
Evan and 10-year-old Alex - an 86 pound black bear had Evan in his
grasp...Brother Alex says, "I was throwing sticks and stones and all
these rocks at it." ...If the bear does become aggressive, rangers
suggest that you stand your ground, make yourself seem as big as
possible, and, if you're with others, get in a group. It's important to
yell, talk loud, and throw sticks or rocks at it, too. (Uh, didn't that
fail to work promptly in this case?)
