Georgia Gun Dealer Made Right Move in NYC Trial: Georgia gun dealer Jay
Wallace's decision Monday to default on a lawsuit by New York Mayor
Michael Bloomberg, and carry his case to an appeals court, was the right
move because of genuine concerns he could not get a fair trial before
federal judge Jack B. Weinstein, the Second Amendment Foundation said
today..."Mr. Wallace and his attorney didn't throw in the towel,"
Gottlieb stated, "they merely avoided being kangaroo-kicked in Judge
Weinstein's court. There is no indication this case is over, and based
on New York's track record in court against the gun industry, whatever
feeling of victory Mayor Bloomberg and his cronies now enjoy is almost
certain to be very short-lived."

On the Eve of the Heller Decision: Anticipating the Supreme Court's
expected late June decision in District of Columbia v. Heller, which
will decide the constitutionality of a D.C. law restricting
gun-ownership rights, many analysts have turned to the Founders'
writings in an effort to understand the Second Amendment. What analysts
need to do - recognizing that language and word usage change over time -
is turn to America's first dictionary...Known as the Father of American
Scholarship and Education, Webster believed that popular sovereignty in
government must be accompanied by popular usage in language. In "A
Compendious Dictionary of the English Language," published in 1806, and
"An American Dictionary of the English Language," published in 1828 and
adopted by Congress as the American standard, Webster defined all the
words in the Second Amendment...

And After the Decision...: Several gun rights lawmakers say they won't
start packing heat on Capitol Hill if the Supreme Court overturns
Washington, D.C.'s handgun ban. Rep. Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) and other
advocates of the Second Amendment support reversing the District's
32-year-old handgun ban, but say security in the Capitol Buildings means
there's no need for them to carry a gun to work. "Why would I need to
carry a gun? I mean, look at these guys, there's four guns around us
right now," said Ryan, referring to four armed U.S. Capitol Police
officers around the entrance to the Speaker's Lobby. At the same time,
Ryan and others are adamant that they should have the right to bring a
gun to the Capitol... (How about on the way to and from work?)

Judge Voids Some Philadelphia Infringements: A judge ruled that the City
of Philadelphia could not enforce new ordinances that would ban assault
weapons and limit handgun purchases to one per person per month. The
judge, Jane Cutler Greenspan of the Philadelphia Court of Common Pleas,
ruled in favor of the National Rifle Association, which argued that only
the legislature had the right to make gun laws. But Judge Greenspan
denied on procedural grounds the association's request to overturn three
other gun ordinances. One would allow guns to be removed from people who
were declared to be a risk to themselves or others, and another would do
the same for those under a protection-from-abuse order. The third would
require the reporting of lost or stolen guns.

Ohio SB 184 Analysis: What changes will SB184 make to Ohio law? How do
they apply to the average hunter, target shooter, and concealed carry
license holder? The law does not go into effect for three months (exact
date will be posted when it is finalized), but we have received many
requests for a list of what this bill does. To that end, here is a
summary of the changes in SB184...

Gun-Hating Priest Suspended from Pulpit: CBS 2 News has learned that
Francis Cardinal George is temporarily removing Father Michael Pfleger
from his position as pastor of St. Sabina Roman Catholic Church on
Chicago's South Side. CBS 2 Chief Correspondent Jay Levine reports the
move comes after several days of deliberation and consultation by the
Cardinal, who first learned about Pfleger's racially charged comments
about senators Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton from the pulpit of
Trinity Unity Church of Christ last Thursday night. (No mention is made
of Fr. Plegger's apparent calls for the death of a suburban Chicago-area
gun shop last year.)

Gun Makers Aid Gun Banners: Having just devoted a substantial chunk of
pro bono legal work fighting governments committed to destroying your
gun rights, I was horrified to read the March 2008 editions of several
of my favorite gun magazines. Prominently featured in each edition was a
feature story about a large manufacturer of 1911-type guns, breathlessly
detailing the "gee whiz" details of their newest model dedicated to a
California police agency. Each of the stories went into the history of
the department the gun was designed for, yet one critical piece of
background information was omitted from the tide of "fanboy" coverage.
These guns were all designed for a local government committed to
stripping civilians of the right to own this same gun...

Oops, Wrong Cars: Metro Police say a 17-year-old shot during a
confrontation in the parking lot of a Las Vegas apartment complex early
this morning and died later at the hospital...Police and emergency
medical officials found Johnny Boyd Eagletail with a gunshot wound to
his torso. He was taken to University Medical Center where he died from
his injuries hours later. A man at the apartment complex confronted
Eagletail and asked about damaged vehicles in the parking lot. The
victim allegedly pulled a knife and moved toward the man who fired one
shot from the pistol, police said. The man with the gun remained at the
scene and spoke with Metro detectives. He was not arrested. The case
will be submitted to the district attorney's office for review.

Rule One, Rule Two, Rule Three Reminder: An Alexandria (LA) man was
recovering after accidentally shooting himself while showing his
girlfriend how to handle a pistol on Saturday in the parking lot of a
fast-food restaurant. Police said the 21-year-old man told investigators
he forgot he had just reloaded the gun, and squeezed the trigger while
putting the gun into the driver's door panel. The bullet went through
his inner left thigh. Police said the man repeatedly told investigators
he was ex-military and knows how to handle a gun, and was very
embarrassed by the incident. (Rule One: All firearms are always loaded,
Rule Two: Never let the muzzle cross anything you're not prepared to
shoot. Rule Three: Keep your finger out of the trigger guard, up on the
frame, unitl your sights are on the target and you're prepared to fire.)

Arrested Police Chief Slammed for Firearm Collection: Just beyond the
reach of the North Coast fog, this little community of 1,150 basked
until recently under the protection of a police force of just four
officers. Four officers packing 31 submachine guns. The Blue Lake police
force was armed on a par with a big-city SWAT team. And no Blue Lakers
knew until Police Chief David Gundersen's life began to very publicly
unravel...As investigators dug deeper into his private life, they
discovered Gundersen's guns. At home, he had a weapons cache that
included a machine gun and a James Bond-style pistol with a silencer,
both unregistered. At police headquarters, he had enough weaponry to arm
a small platoon...

Tangentially Related: If Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) is elected
president, he might find it difficult to move a conservative Supreme
Court nominee through the U.S. Senate, according to columnist Robert
Novak. Novak was speaking in response to a question from Cybercast News
Service at conservative event in Trenton, N.J., last Friday. At the
"Defending the American Dream Summit" organized by Americans for
Prosperity (AFP), Novak - a long-time Washington political reporter and
conservative commentator - painted a bleak political landscape for the
Republican Party and conservatives in the near term.
