No Mailing Yesterday: I have had a persistent problem with internet
connectivity early in the morning for several days now. For better or
for worse, there were only a couple of items worth sharing yesterday so
I have included them in today's mailing rather than doing an evening
mailing.

Ohio Castle-Doctrine Bill Clears House Committee: Law enforcement is not
lining up behind Governor Strickland in his support of a bill that would
allow a new protection against prosecution for people who kill an
attacker in self defense. Under the bill Strickland favors, people who
injure or kill an attacker in self defense no longer would shoulder the
burden to prove their actions were justifiable...A House committee
recommended the bill today 9-3 and it is set for a vote by the full
House tomorrow. It already has cleared the Senate.

Philadelphia Mayor Turns Back to Harrisburg for More Infringements:
Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said Tuesday he wants to work with
anyone willing to help him address the gun violence that plagues his
city and other parts of the state...John Hohenwarter, state lobbyist for
the National Rifle Association, said city officials should concentrate
instead on improving Philadelphia's criminal-justice system. "I'm
disappointed that the mayor continues to focus on the firearm and not
the criminal," Hohenwarter said. "You have a revolving-door courtroom,
and you have intervention programs which just aren't working or they're
just not there. You have to make sure you keep the bad guy in jail."
(Not that it's relevant but an SKS is less powerful than a .30-30, which
has probably taken more deer than any other caliber in the US. Years
ago, I was told that the SKS had replaced the .30-30 as the most
commonly used deer rifle in North Carolina.)

Arizona Governor Vetoes RKBA Bills: Gov. Janet Napolitano on Tuesday
vetoed a pair of proposals to expand gun rights in Arizona, arguing the
measures would have needlessly put law enforcement and the public at
risk. Senate Bill 1106, sponsored by Sen. Chuck Gray, R-Mesa, would have
created a state-issued, concealed-weapon permit valid for a lifetime.
Under current law, a gun owner must renew the permit every five years,
and each time undergo a new criminal background check...Napolitano
rejected a second gun-related measure, House Bill 2629, that would have
allowed an individual to announce that he or she has a weapon or
brandish it in instances when a "reasonable person would believe that
physical force is immediately necessary to protect himself."

Oregon DOJ Files Brief Against Teacher Carry: The Oregon School  Boards
Association has filed an amicus brief in an effort to prevent trained,
licensed, school employees from having self defense firearms on school
property. This is no surprise as the OSBA has a long history of opposing
self defense in schools. But now the Oregon Department of Justice has
joined the battle against self defense with their own amicus brief. As
you may know, the Oregon Firearms Educational Foundation is appealing
the decision to deny Shirley Katz, an Oregon concealed handgun license
holder, the right to protect herself and her students while at work...

Texas College under Fire for Banning Empty-Holster Protest: ...Robert L.
Shibley, vice president for the Foundation for Individual Rights in
Education, said wearing empty holsters is similar to students donning
black arm bands to protest the Vietnam War, a right that the Supreme
Court upheld in 1969. "It's important because it's a matter of symbolic
speech," Shibley said. He also said several campus free-speech zones had
been ruled unconstitutional because they limited free speech, including
Texas Tech University's 20-foot diameter gazebo that was the designated
zone for 28,000 students...

The Bullet Counters: "Killing an Unarmed Man." That is how the
front-page headline in the New York Times characterized an incident in
which a man tried to run over a policeman with his car and was shot by
three policemen on the scene, including his intended victim. An
automobile is a deadly weapon. If you are killed by an automobile, you
are just as dead as if you had been shot through the heart...The biggest
and most common talking point when the police fire at someone is
counting how many bullets they fired. There are politicians, media
people and - above all - community activists who can work themselves
into a rage over how many bullets were fired...

Nevada Permit-Holder Ends Attack in Bar: ..."I was there. I saw
everything," said Hayes, who lay stomach down on the floor just six feet
away from shooter Ernesto Fuentes Villagomez, 30, of Winnemucca.
"(Villagomez) looked very determined. You could see it in his eyes. He
wasn't just shooting random people. He was focused on those two."
..Villagomez then started walking toward the middle of the bar before
suddenly collapsing to the floor. Hayes later found out that Villagomez
was shot by a 48-year-old customer from Reno who was carrying a
concealed handgun. Authorities declined to release the Reno man's name,
only saying that the man had a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon.
The man was released after authorities ruled the death a justifiable
homicide....

Oops, Wrong House: A Fort Lauderdale homeowner shot and wounded a
would-be burglar who tried to get into his house shortly after midnight
today, police said...Anderson is accused of ripping open a porch screen
to try to get into David Hadden's house, and then charging at Hadden
with something in his hands when the owner confronted him at about 12:18
a.m., Sousa said. Hadden, 50, fired several shots from a weapon,
striking Anderson, police said. Anderson was taken to Broward General
Medical Center and released into police custody shortly afterwards,
Sousa said. (It sounds as though Mr. Hadden should not have settled for
all the training that came in the box with the gun.)

Rule Five Reminder: A Roanoke police sergeant became both a victim and
an investigator when his service gun reportedly was stolen from his
police vehicle. The gun is issued to Sgt. T.A. Hartson, who works in the
investigation unit, said Capt. Chris Perkins with Roanoke police. The
department is conducting an internal investigation into the theft.
Hartson reported to Roanoke County police about 6:30 p.m. Friday that
the gun had been stolen from his unmarked vehicle, which was parked at
his county home, said Roanoke County police Sgt. Jeff Herrick. Perkins
said the vehicle was locked. County police believe the gun was stolen
between 12:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Friday, Herrick said. (Rule Five: Maintain
control of your firearm.)

Toronto Mayor Calls for Closure of Shooting Ranges: Toronto Mayor David
Miller says he's in favour of a report calling for recreational shooting
ranges in the city to be shut down. He says "nobody can deny that hobby
directly results in people being shot and killed on the streets." Miller
also wants to see his city have the power to block gun manufacturers and
wholesalers from opening new plants or warehouses. He added that
recreational shooting is a hobby that creates danger to others because
"guns are stolen routinely from so-called legal owners."
