JPFO On DOJ Heller Brief: ...So much for the old saw that Republican
politicians, if only they could, would get rid of all of those
unconstitutional federal gun laws, but we just need to be patient until
they are in a position to do so. Now, when a case is before the Supreme
Court, and they actually have a chance (however remote) of striking down
those federal gun laws by convincing the Supreme Court to rule those
laws unconstitutional, we have the US government, in the form of the
Bush Administration controlled Justice Department, chock full of
Republican lawyers, arguing to the Court that all of those federal gun
laws are perfectly constitutional and nothing in the Second Amendment
can be used to strike them down. To the contrary, doing so would be
"dangerous"!

Hillary On Firearm Ownership: ...So here's what I would do. We need to
have a registry that really works with good information about people who
are felons, people who have been committed to mental institutions like
the man in Virginia Tech who caused so much death and havoc. We need to
make sure that that information is in a timely manner, both collected
and presented. We do need to crack down on illegal gun dealers. This is
something that I would like to see more of. And we need to enforce the
laws that we have on the books. I would also work to reinstate the
assault-weapons ban. We now have, once again, police deaths going up
around the country, and in large measure because bad guys now have
assault weapons again. We stopped it for awhile. Now they're back on the
streets...

Concealed-Carry-Reform Bill Passes Georgia Senate: A bill that would
expand the rights of Georgians to carry concealed weapons sailed through
the state Senate on Thursday, over the objections of some law
enforcement groups. The bill would allow those with concealed weapons
permits to carry their weapon in a state park or historic site. And
drivers eligible for a gun permit would be able to carry a loaded
firearm anywhere they want in their car, under the legislation...Under
the bill that passed on Thursday, only the 300,000 Georgians with
concealed weapons permits would be eligible to take advantage of the
parking lot provision. And workplace property owners would have a say in
the matter. In publicly accessible parking lots, the same rules must
apply to customers and employees. Guns could only be banned for
employees if they are prohibited for customers as well.

Firearms and Explosives, traveled from Washington, D.C., to announce
that the bureau will spend more than $10 million annually to add 35

In the past two years, the bureau has dedicated about 100 agents and 25
investigators to the region, officials said.

California Bill Would Restrict Ammo Sales: Assemblyman Kevin De Leon,
D-Los Angeles, said he will bring back controversial legislation that
would impose new restrictions on the sale of firearms ammunition. When
he does, he will jump into a gun law debate that could find California
moving toward an all-purpose ID card for guns and ammunition. De Leon's
bill, AB362, would have created a licensing and registration system
governing ammunition sales. As originally written, it would have
required the state Department of Justice to create a database of
registered ammunition vendors. It also would have demanded that vendors
keep ammunition behind the counter and conduct background checks on any
employees who handled ammunition.

Urgent In Arizona: As we informed you earlier this week, on Friday,
January 18, 2008, the Arizona Game and Fish Commission (AZGFC) will be
holding a public meeting to discuss issues concerning gun owners and
hunters.  Of greatest interest are briefings on shooting range funding
and development (Item #3) as well as general issues associated with lead
from spent ammunition (Item #10).  Since last year, when California
passed its unjustified ban on lead ammunition for all hunting in condor
range, the NRA has been keeping a close eye on the same issue in
Arizona.  The Grand Canyon State has an experimental population of
condors and some extremists in Arizona are advocating for a
California-style ban!  While the Commission agenda does not specifically
mention a potential ban in Item #10, gun owners and hunters must be
vigilant to ensure that this bad public policy does not spread!
