America Needs More CCW: ...Suppose the Omaha mall held, say, 5,000
people busily shopping. If that were so, we would know now that it is
less than a one in 5,000 chance that a law- abiding American will be
carrying a firearm. And for all the citizens of Nebraska that could have
been saved this week, that's a pathetic performance by society...If one
out of every 500 people were utilizing a concealed carry permit in
Nebraska today, there could have been 10 guns trained on target when the
adolescent evil fool began his self-indulgent terrorism. But because we
do not have even one in 5,000, there are nine people dead. (Commentary
ignores that the mall in question was posted "no guns.")

CCRKBA Comments: Eight more innocent Americans have been sacrificed on
the altar of political correctness at Omaha's Westroads Mall this week,
and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms said
today that the real outrage of this crime is that it happened in a "gun
free zone" where law-abiding private citizens are disarmed by mall rules
and state statute. "In the wake of this horrible crime," said CCRKBA
Chairman Alan Gottlieb, "gun control extremists are already demanding
more useless gun control legislation. A prohibition on firearms at
Westroads Mall did not stop Robert Hawkins, but it did give him a
risk-free environment in which to unleash his rampage."

John Lott Comments: A Google news search using the phrase "Omaha Mall
Shooting" finds an incredible 2,794 news stories worldwide for the last
day. From India and Taiwan to Britain and Austria, there are probably
few people in the world who haven't heard about this tragedy. But
despite the massive news coverage, none of the media coverage, at least
by 10 a.m. Thursday, mentioned this central fact: Yet another attack
occurred in a gun-free zone...

John Longenecker Comments: Nine dead thanks to a micro gun ban policy. A
gun ban. Bans on school campus and in Malls, workplace and other locales
are nothing but micro gun bans with tragic results as gigantic as any
other shooting. Typical policy has been the same as stubborn school
campus policy and workplace, saying they want to protect their patrons,
but the result is to talk patrons out of their lives. Nine dead for this
kind of brilliance. In less than six minutes. Nine dead thanks to a gun
ban. This is what we call Lip Service, where the results so obviously
discredit the excuses...

CCRKBA Opposes Sullivan Nomination: After due consideration, the
Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms strongly
encourages the U.S. Senate to reject confirmation of Michael Sullivan as
director of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives
until he demonstrates responsible leadership. While we have admired Mr.
Sullivan's no-nonsense opposition to attempts by New York Mayor Michael
Bloomberg and others to gain sweeping access to sensitive BATFE firearms
trace data, we are alarmed at what appear to be significant abuses of
authority by BATFE agents under his command. The BATFE is an agency in
serious need of reform, and we are not confident Mr. Sullivan can
accomplish such reform, based on agency conduct under his term as acting
director...

Suit May Have Implications For Philadelphia: Delaware County attorney C.
Scott Shields says Mayor-elect Michael Nutter's "stop-and-frisk"
proposal for getting illegal guns off Philadelphia's streets is a
lawsuit waiting to happen. Shields, the mayor of Rutledge Borough, plans
to sue the city himself if Nutter implements the policy - just as soon
as he gets done suing Upper Darby Township for what you might call its
"take-and-keep" approach to gun control...

Georgia Park-Carry Ban Overturned: The Georgia Court of Appeals has
overturned a Coweta Superior Court decision and ruled that Coweta
County's ordinance prohibiting guns in parks is preempted by state law.
The Court of Appeals ruled unanimously Tuesday to overturn a decision by
Judge Jack Kirby. In June, Kirby ruled in favor of Coweta County in a
suit filed against Coweta by Ed Stone and gun rights group Georgia
Carry. Stone, a Coweta resident and president of Georgia Carry, had
appeared before the Coweta County Board of Commissioners earlier this
year. He told the commissioners that the rule forbidding guns in county
parks was preempted by state law. When the county refused to change the
rule, Stone and Georgia Carry sued.

Open-Carry Drive On Utah Campus: A pro-gun student group is gearing up
to again challenge the University of Utah on its weapons policies, this
time seeking approval for what they view as their right to openly carry
weapons on campus. U. administrators are "circumventing the Legislature"
and creating their own laws, allege members of Second Amendment Students
of Utah, who want to meet with U. officials to hash out their
diametrically opposed positions on Utah gun laws...McCrory's concealed
weapons permit allows him to be armed on campus, but he risks expulsion
if he were to wear his handgun openly under the university's
interpretation of a statute that specifically bars firearms on school
campuses.

Oops, Wrong House: St. Louis police say one of four men who stormed a
home in the 8900 block of Halls Ferry Road was apparently shot by one of
the residents...The man who was shot carried a gun into the home, but it
was knocked from his hand and fell to the floor. He struggled with one
of the residents, and was shot in the struggle, police say. It was
unclear if the man had been shot with his own gun. A .357-caliber
handgun found beneath him had not been fired, police say. (Sounds to me
as though he was shot before he was able to reacquire his own handgun.)

Oops, Wrong Construction Site: A teenager was shot inside a West Side
(San Antonio) home under construction by a contractor who was keeping
watch because of previous break-ins, police said. The victim and another
teenager gained entry into the home in the 200 block of Early Trail at 1
a.m. by breaking a window, police said. The noise woke up the
contractor, who was asleep. He told police he thought one of the teens
was carrying a gun, so he grabbed a pistol and shot one of them in the hip.

Man Mistakes Screwdriver For Gun. Shoots At Burglars: A Stratford
homeowner shot at two men who had allegedly broken into his home,
according to police. Police said officers received a 911 call from a
home on Graham Street before 10 a.m. on Thursday. Someone called and
reported that shots had been fired and that there had possibly been a
home invasion, according to police. When officers arrived, the homeowner
told police that he had interrupted two teen suspects burglarizing his
garage. The homeowner said that he fired two shots at the teens, but
missed, and the suspected burglars fled. (Note title for linked video.

S&W Reports Increased Profit: Gun maker Smith & Wesson Holding Corp.
said Thursday profit rose 3 percent in its fiscal second quarter, as
strong international and U.S. police sales offset weak domestic consumer
demand...International and law-enforcement sales buoyed results. Several
police departments selected Smith & Wesson weapons recently, sending its
military and police pistol deliveries up 54 percent during the quarter.
International sales more than doubled during the second quarter to $7.8
million. A soft U.S. hunting market due to warm weather resulted in high
inventories and lower product prices, making the second quarter a
"challenging one," Chief Executive Michael Golden said in a statement.
(I didn't realize that S&W had that much to offer the general hunting
market.)
