Teacher's CCW Suit Filed In Oregon: A Medford high school teacher filed
suit in Jackson County Circuit Court Tuesday challenging the school
district's policy prohibiting employees from carrying concealed weapons
on campuses...Under state law, permit holders may carry concealed
weapons on public school campuses, but most districts have passed
policies restricting employees from doing so. Jim Leuenberger, a
Portland-based attorney representing the teacher, said state law bars
local governments from restricting possession of firearms by permit
holders. That law voids any district policies to the contrary, he said.

Californian Sues Over CWP Denial: Each member of the Santa Maria City
Council, along with Police Chief Danny Macagni, was served Tuesday night
with a federal lawsuit filed by a resident who claims his civil rights
were violated when he was denied a permit to carry a concealed
weapon...McCloud claims the council members and Macagni have
intentionally denied his constitutional rights to equal treatment by
treating McCloud's application to carry a concealed weapon differently
than those who have been granted such permits. According to the suit,
that is a violation of McCloud's 14th Amendment rights.

Baltimore Mayor May Team With Bloomberg: Suggesting that she might
consider joining a ground-breaking lawsuit to stem the flow of illegal
weapons, Baltimore Mayor Sheila Dixon met yesterday with New York City
Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg - the architect of that litigation - to talk
about ways both cities can improve education and fight crime. Dixon, who
has unveiled a handful of novel approaches this year to deal with guns
that enter Baltimore, said the city is collecting information on people
who are convicted of gun crimes and will use the data to determine
whether other measures, such as directly suing gun dealers, are appropriate.

Brady Bunch Applauds IACP: Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign
to Prevent Gun Violence, called today's report by the International
Association of Chiefs of Police, Taking a Stand: Reducing Gun Violence
in Our Communities, a "clear road map from the nation's police chiefs of
steps we can take now to combat gun violence." "Our nation's police are
on the front lines in the fight for public safety. In this landmark
report, police leaders are saying they are tired of the nation's gun
policies being held hostage by the special interest gun lobby," Helmke said.

legislation that would close the "gun show loophole," a term referring
to transactions between private sellers, which allow buyers to avoid
mandatory background screenings required by federally licensed gun dealers.

Hysteria From Oregon: A semi- or fully-loaded automatic long-range
50-caliber rifle is among the most destructive and powerful weapons
legally available in the United States today... ("Semi-loaded" or
"semi-automatic"? This columnist's parade of ignorance accelerates
downhill from her opening sentence. Very little available .50 BMG ammo
is armor-piercing/incendiary. )

Fred Thompson, Ron Paul Compete For RKBA Vote: Since Republican
presidential hopeful Fred Thompson has jumped out of the starting gate
running on Second Amendment issues, perhaps we should look at Thompson's

Gun Owners Suspicious Of Giuliani, Romney RKBA Shifts: Guns haven't much
figured as an issue in the Republicans' 2008 presidential campaign,
overshadowed by the war in Iraq and health care. That will change
tomorrow when the nation's largest gun-owners' advocacy group, the
National Rifle Association, holds a forum in Washington where its
members will assess the leading Republican candidates' commitment to
their cause. At least two of the party's frontrunners, former New York
Mayor Rudy Giuliani and former Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney, have
histories of support for gun control. While the two are shifting their
stances, it may not be enough to overcome the suspicions of gun owners,
who may be more attracted by former Tennessee Senator Fred Thompson.

The Defective Promise Of "Gun Control": Gun bans wrongly and wrongfully
affect non-gun owners because bans disarm only the law-abiding. Nothing
new, until you see how this spreads. As usual, criminal laws do not
interfere with crime until after-the-fact; gun control interferes with
only the honest and before-the-fact, and then again after-the-fact,
often within a system which victimizes constituents twice. Lifting gun
bans can enhance crime control and lift government burdens. For some
officials, carrying burdens is desirable, but it is an abuse of the law
against the interests of the United States.
