"Flat-Stock" vs. "Straight-Stock" Techniques: After sending yesterday's
mailing I reviewed my own technique for moving with a rifle and realized
that I actually inwardly rotate the rifle about 30 degrees when I lower
the muzzle while leaving the toe of the stock in the shoulder pocket. On
depressing the muzzle, this rotation seems to get the muzzle pointed
between the path of my feet. On return to the shooting position, the
counter-rotation seems to eliminate the tendency of the sights to ride
over the intended target, as John described for the "flat-stock" technique.

Oregon Teacher Speaks Out: I'm the Medford school teacher you've heard
about. The one who will ask an Oregon judge on Tuesday to affirm my
right to carry a Glock pistol to my school so I can protect myself from
a man who's hit me and threatened to kill me: my ex-husband...I believe
that Oregon law clearly permits me - and anyone else with a concealed
handgun license - to carry a concealed weapon into schools. My employer,
the Medford School District, maintains that I would be violating
district policy if I did so.

Obama's RKBA Record: During his days as a state legislator in Illinois,
Obama was a big fan of gun bans. He supported a ban on all
semi-automatic firearms, and wanted to increase the already-draconian
laws regarding firearms purchases in Illinois. He was also in favor of
renewing the Clinton gun ban back in 2004, and opposed the Protection of
Lawful Commerce in Arms Act.

Ted Nugent vs. Barack Obama: ...In the video, which has made the rounds
online and on television, Nugent stands onstage with an AR-15
semiautomatic rifle in each hand. First he tells of his recent visit to
Chicago, during which he claims he said to Sen. Barack Obama, "Hey,
Obama! You might want to suck on one of these [guns], you punk!" Nugent
adds, "Obama, he's a piece of s---, and I told him to suck on my machine
gun. Let's hear it for him!" (It sounds as though Nugent may also have
been thumbing his nose at California's "assault weapon" prohibitions.)

Miami PD Authorizes Patrol Rifles: Patrol officers will have the option
of carrying assault rifles as police try to combat the rise in the use
of similar weapons by criminals, Miami's police chief said Sunday.
Police Chief John Timoney approved the new policy last week, before a
Miami-Dade police officer was killed in a shootout with an assault
rifle-wielding suspect on Thursday.

New York's Police Departments Adjust To Ammo Shortages: A national pinch
on ammunition supplies because of heavy military demand and metal
shortages has become an administrative headache for some area police
departments, which have reduced firearms training..."It has slowed down
our ability to acquire ammunition, all kinds of ammunition," said New
York State Police spokesman Lt. Glenn Miner. "We haven't experienced any
shortages, but we're adjusting our reorder schedules." For the
4,900-member State Police, the supply issues have not affected any
operations or rifle range use, but orders are being placed further in
advance, Miner said.

Oops, Wrong House: A would-be burglar definitely picked the wrong house
to break into early Saturday morning. Chicago police said the man was in
good condition at Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn after he was shot in
the thigh by the homeowner, an off-duty Chicago police officer. (Note
the shot to the thigh, consistent with pushing low and probably to the
shooter's non-dominant side.)

Rule Five Reminder: The news of Jazamine Wellisley's tragic death
continues to stun Davison teachers and fellow students. The 12-year-old
who attended Hahn Intermediate School before moving to Ironwood last
spring was accidentally shot when a young family member picked up a
loaded rifle in the bedroom of a relative on Aug. 28. The gun was owned
by a 13-year-old boy who was talking on the phone in the room where the
accident occurred. A gun rack, ready to mount, was found in the corner
on the floor. (Rule Five: Maintain control of your firearm.)

From England's Past: ...Writing for the London Times, writer Richard
Mundy notes that, when English citizens routinely carried weapons, the
average citizen was much safer then, than now. "Charlotte Bront
recalled that her curate father fastened his watch and pocketed his
pistol every morning when he got dressed; Beatrix Potter remarked on a
Yorkshire country hotel where only one of the eight or nine guests was
not carrying a revolver; in 1909, policemen in Tottenham borrowed at
least four pistols from passers-by (and were joined by other armed
citizens) when they set off in pursuit of two anarchists unwise enough
to attempt an armed robbery," he writes.
