Ohio Needs A Castle-Doctrine Law: Imagine that someone broke into your
house and forced you to defend your family by using the gun kept stored
in your nightstand. The instant you pulled that trigger your life has
changed in ways you cannot fathom...What happens next is the most
shocking thing that has ever happened to you, including the very recent
trauma of shooting another human being: Time now seems to truly stand
still as the Police calmly read you your rights, place you in hand-cuffs
and lead you to a patrol car for transport to jail.

Here We Go Again: The spray of bullets that killed one Miami-Dade County
police officer and hurt three others this week came from something
increasingly common on this city's streets. Once solely found in the
hands of soldiers, high-powered assault weapons like the one police said
was used in Thursday's attack are becoming the guns of choice for gang
members and other violent criminals. And when they are aimed at officers
on patrol, there's little authorities can do to escape. (As everyone
knows, the officer would not be as dead if he had been shot with a more
powerful .30-30 or .30-06 hunting rifle.)

Thompson Speaks Out Against RKBA Infringements: On the day South Florida
mourned a slain police officer, Republican presidential candidate Fred
Thompson stopped in Miami and stuck firmly to his guns over what he says
is the unnecessary call for limiting the right to bear arms. ''I do not
think that abrogating Second Amendment rights is a good idea,'' the
Republican said at the Versailles restaurant in Little Havana...Thompson
made his remarks concerning guns to reporters and not supporters at
Versailles. He later mentioned the need for strong Second Amendment
rights during a speech in Cape Coral, on the Gulf Coast, where the crowd
applauded.

DC - Condoms vs. Guns: The city of Washington, D.C., wants the Supreme
Court to reverse an appeals court's decision to overturn its ban on
private ownership of handguns. That pesky Second Amendment is involved.
It's too bad D.C. doesn't approach the problem of its citizens being
harmed by gun violence (even though guns are banned) the way it does the
problem of citizens being harmed by contracting HIV... Speaking of
irresistible urges, D.C. isn't standing by while its citizens contract
HIV, either, although its approach is entirely different. The district
seeks to protect citizens from death via gun by banning or disabling
guns. Delicacy prevents making the analogy explicit, but the tactic
adopted by the city to protect citizens from death via sexually
transmitted disease is to give away free condoms.

Many Michigan Principals Support Armed School Personnel: Should teachers
and principals be allowed to carry guns on the job? Response to that
question surprised James Ballard, executive director of the Michigan
Association of Secondary School Principals, when he sent an e-mail
survey to the state's high school and middle school principals.
One-third of those who responded leaned toward armed schools. "It did
surprise me it was that high," Ballard said Tuesday. "Some feel strongly
they should be able to carry a concealed weapon.

Oops, Wrong House: ...The latest shots came Thursday night when an armed
14-year-old boy reportedly kicked down the back door to Jimmy Shaw's
Arkansas home. Detectives say Shaw then fired his handgun striking the
teen in the abdomen. He died several hours later. Neighbors, some who
don't want to be identified, say Shaw acted in self defense.

Also In Pine Bluff: Taron Hopkins, 15, was shot to death last month by
Chuck Smith, the owner of Chuck Smith Pawn Shop. Police say Hopkins was
carrying a tire iron, and two other people with him were trying to break
into the shop. Prosecutor Steve Dalrymple says the shooting was
justified because Smith faced an intruder with a weapon.

Oops, Wrong Mini-Mart: The owner of an Orange County convenience store
shot and killed a burglar early Friday morning. Deputies said it
happened inside a Citgo station on Pine Hills Road, just north of Silver
Star Road where they believe more than a dozen gun shots were fired...
"No. Because this is the way it had to go down. His days were numbered,
by the way. His days were numbered. If not me, he would have gotten
somebody. If he had a weapon I would have gone down or he would have
gone down," said the clerk when asked if he regretted shooting the man
and killing him.

Rule Four Reminder, Part 1: A pastor in California complains that he
cannot get an apology from a deputy sheriff after being struck with a
bullet that the deputy lawfully fired at a suspect who had pointed a gun
at him. (Without further details, it's hard to say whether the quest for
an apology may be a legal maneuver to gain an admission for a
contemplated lawsuit.)

Rule Four Reminder, Part 2: An Albany (NY) Police detective is
recovering after he was mistakenly shot in the hand by an Albany County
Sheriff's deputy... That is when police say a 100-pound mixed-breed dog
suddenly attacked Connery, biting his right arm and dragging him to the
ground. A sheriff's deputy shot the dog to stop the attack. The bullet
went through the animal, killing the dog, and then hitting the detective
in the right hand. (Rule Four: Always be sure of your target and what's
beyond it.)

What Kind Of Holster, What Kind Of Gun?: A bullet accidentally fired
from a SWAT officer's gun blew through the deputy's boot and grazed a
fellow officer's leg during a standoff this weekend... Garner's gun, a
45-caliber weapon, was in safe mode but when he leaned over to turn off
the lights, his equipment caught on the safety latch and trigger, firing
the gun. (Assuming it was a handgun, one has to question why it wasn't
in a holster that would have covered the entire trigger guard. The claim
that equipment snagged both the "safety latch" and the trigger suggests
that the safety was mounted on the trigger, such as on a Glock or a S&W
Sigma or M&P pistol.)

One- Or Two-Handed Hold?: Mike Conti takes a refreshing look at the
value of emphasizing a two-handed hold on the handgun and focusing on
the front sight when experience shows that people may do neither when
confronted with a target that is actually trying to shoot them.

Jodie Foster Reminder: A list member, who had apparently missed an
earlier link quoting Jodie Foster on the RKBA, recently sent me a
favorable review of her film The Brave One. Here are some of Foster's
off-screen words: "I don't believe that any gun should be in the hand of
a thinking, feeling, breathing human being. Americans are by nature
filled with rage-slash-fear. And guns are a huge part of our culture. I
know I'm crazy because I'm only supposed to say that in Europe. But
violence corrupts absolutely. By the end of this, her transformation is
complete. 'F--- all of you, now I'm just going to kill people with my
bare hands.'"

There's A Reason God Put Those People On An Island: A mother in England
who had her bag snatched was told by police it was not a crime - because
she chased after the thief and won her property back. (Had the victim
threatened the robber with a toy pistol in order to regain her purse,
you can bet the victim would have been charged with a crime.)
