DC's Flawed Reasoning: In asking the Supreme Court to let the District
of Columbia ban handguns, the city has a simple argument: Whatever one
thinks of the Second Amendment, banning handguns is a "reasonable
regulation" to protect public safety. The problem for the city is that
anyone who can look up the crime numbers will see that D.C.'s violent
crime rate went up, not down, after the ban.

California Senate Approves Microstamping Bill: California would be the
first state to require that every semiautomatic handgun cartridge be
stamped with an identifying mark if the governor signs a bill that has
now cleared both chambers of the Legislature. The Senate approved the
bill Thursday, sending it back to the Assembly for a final vote on
amendments. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger has not said whether he will sign
the bill once it reaches his desk.

On The Other Hand...: California governors would be barred from ordering
the seizure of firearms and ammunition from law-abiding citizens during
state emergencies, under legislation that was sent to Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger on Wednesday. The National Rifle Association sought the
bill by Assemblyman Doug LaMalfa, R-Willows, after Louisiana authorities
reportedly seized firearms from law-abiding citizens following the
flooding caused by Hurricane Katrina.

Daly City vs. San Francisco: There's no shortage of anti-gun mayors in
California, but the pro-gun mayors don't get a lot of attention.  That's
why I was pleased to hear the mayor of Daly City, California, recently
say there's no reason to ban gun shows from the Cow Palace in Daly City.

Firearm Sales Resume In Pennsylvania: Gun sales resumed in Pennsylvania
Tuesday after a two-day shutdown that upset dealers but gave state
police time to upgrade a computer system used for background
checks...Some gun dealers were angry about the planned shutdown -
initially expected to take four days - and argued that their inability
to complete gun sales during that period would hurt business right at
the start of dove and Canada geese hunting season.

Pennsylvania College Hosts Second Amendment Debate: It's a hot issue
across the country. Guns- should any regulations be imposed? What would
it do to the crime rate if guns were banned? Students and faculty
debated those questions and more at Dickinson College's second amendment
debate. Both pro and anti gun messages were debated in the hopes to find
a real solution to gun violence. (A link is provided for a video clip.)

Gun-Seizure Figures From NYC: About 7,056 illegal guns were recovered in
New York City last year, according to a report released yesterday by the
federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, an increase
of 17 percent over 2005. The bureau also found that 85 percent of the
illegal guns it could trace came from out of state, and that most of the
recovered guns were older, suggesting that trafficking in new guns is down.

From GOA: For months, GOA has been warning gun owners about the
McCarthy-Leahy bill - named after Rep. Carolyn McCarthy (D-NY) and Sen.
Patrick Leahy (D-VT). These anti-gun legislators have teamed up to
introduce a bill that will expand the 1993 Brady Law and disarm hundreds
of thousands of combat veterans - and other Americans. (While McCarthy
and Leahy are this year's primary sponsors, the notorious Senator Chuck
Schumer of New York was a sponsor of this legislation in years past.)
Proponents of the bill tell us that it will bring relief for many gun
owners. But to swallow this, one must first ignore the fact that gun
owners would NOT NEED RELIEF in the first place if some gun owners (and
gun groups) had not thrown their support behind the Brady bill that
passed in 1993 and were not pushing the Veterans Disarmament Bill now.
