A Modest Proposal?: "I'm ready at last to support gun control. I believe
every police agency in the United States - local, state and federal -
should be disarmed. After all, the gun-control people have been saying
for years that we private citizens have no need for firearms. Well, if
that's true for us, it's true for the police. We are the inhabitants of
the country. We live in the neighborhoods, we are the victims of crime,
and if we don't need guns, then who does?" (With Charley Reese, it's
hard to tell if this is tongue in cheek.)

Legislator Summarizes Ohio Castle-Doctrine Bill: In Ohio, if one is
attacked in one's own home, one is not forced to flee the home before
using deadly force. However, Ohio's current self-defense law places the
civil and criminal burden on the victim to prove in court that they were
truly acting to defend themselves from serious physical harm or death...

Rules For Shooting Bears: The recent killing of an 11-year-old boy by a
bear in Utah has prompted discussion of when it's legal to use deadly
force against these animals. "If you're afraid of the bear and you shoot
the bear, then you probably committed a crime," said Scott Root, DWR
conservation outreach manager for central Utah. "If it's coming at you
and your life is in danger, then you're probably OK," Root continued.

Californians Warned Abut Microstamping, Pet-Neutering Bills: There are
two pieces of legislation working their way through the California
legislature that again target legal gun owners - not criminals - and
legal and responsible owners of pets - not the cretins who let their
dogs and cats run neighborhoods, breed indiscriminately, and fill local
shelters with animals that are eventually euthanized.

Rule Five Reminder: A 16-year-old New Jersey girl found a mini-revolver
belonging to an off-duty Philadelphia police officer amusement-park
ride. "I thought it was a toy gun, so I just didn't think anything of
it," the unidentified girl told NBC 10 as she left the Ocean City police
station Thursday. (Rule Five: Maintain control of your firearm.)

Beretta Seeks To Regain Military, Police Market: The top priority of the
Italian firearms' U.S. division is to ''handle all of the U.S. military
business," Oliva said...Beretta's model Px4 Storm semiautomatic 9mm
pistol with tritium sights allows users to aim during low-light
conditions, Oliva said. It also has interchangeable backstraps that can
be adjusted to fit the shooter's hand, which is important because hand
sizes can vary widely among male and female officers, he said.
(Actually, the Luminova sights do not contain tritium and will only glow
for up to 30 minutes, after exposure to light.)

Lewinski Testifies In Trial Of Former Deputy Who Shot Airman: The
average person can draw and point a gun in about a quarter-second, but
it takes even veteran officers more than twice that long to react and
shoot, even when they have their finger on the trigger under the most
simple laboratory conditions, said law enforcement professor Bill
Lewinski.  (Some list members will recognize the name of Bill Lewinski,
some of whose Force Science Research material is shared with the list.)

From GOA: If you've been listening to the news, you know that the
immigration bill may soon be back on the U.S. Senate floor for
consideration. Senator Ted Kennedy of Massachusetts has reintroduced his
immigration bill (along with Senator Specter of Pennsylvania). The new
bill, S. 1639, contains both of the concerns that GOA alerted you to
last month:

   * First, section 205 of the bill could, in the hands of an anti-gun
administration, PUT EVERY MAJOR GUN SHOP OUT OF BUSINESS. (Please
see our alert, dated May 23, for more information on this.)
   * Second, the immigration bill could deny many gun owners their
right to find a job or buy a gun.

In regard to the latter concern, Montana Senator Max Baucus (D) is
sponsoring an amendment that will delete all references to "driver's
licenses" and "identification cards" under the REAL ID Act. This is a
good thing which will have ramifications for gun owners nationwide...

>From The Firearms Coalition:

An unusual opportunity has been brought to our attention and I wanted to
share it with our subscribers.

Our good friends at The Leadership Institute are expanding their college
conservative outreach program and they are looking for 70 dynamic young
people to recruit, train, and assist conservative students on college
campuses in developing effective conservative activist organizations.

If you know of a recent college graduate, or other likely candidate, who
would like to get paid to be politically active - especially pro-gun
conservatives - forward this information to them immediately.

These entry level positions can open all sorts of doors. Don't let them
all be filled with young conservatives that don't really understand the
importance of the Second Amendment - let's get our true believers in
there. (It has long been a complaint that NRA hires people who are
politically savvy but are not particularly firearms oriented. Here's a
stepping-stone toward offering them some better qualified candidates.)

Here is more information about the jobs and how to apply:

>From Morton Blackwell
President, The Leadership Institute

We need help in filling at least 70 exciting job openings this year.

Let's take America's colleges back! The best entry-level opportunity in
the political job market pays you to do exactly that.

Every semester, the Leadership Institute (LI) sends out across the
country a team of motivated, highly trained field representatives. LI
field reps help conservative students break the left-wing monopoly on
college campuses.

Now, you or some other dedicated conservative you know can join LI as a
full-time fall field representative and start your political career.

The pay is generous. The experience is priceless.

Field reps receive $3,000 per month salary, plus $600 per week housing
allowance, as well as additional allowances for cell phone use,
recruitment expenses, gas, and more. A free laptop is yours to use
throughout the semester. It becomes yours to keep upon successful
completion of the program.

Opportunities for full-time, paid jobs fighting for your beliefs do not
come along very often. Apply now -- this may be the most exciting job
you'll ever have.

Your employment with LI as a field rep is rsum gold. Field reps use
the experience and connections they gain from LI's National Field
Representative Program to launch rewarding careers in:

Grassroots activism
Campaigns for public office
Political appointments
Capitol Hill staff
Lobbying
Long-term employment with the Leadership Institute
Employment with other leading conservative organizations that help
shape American politics and policy.

At the end of this message, you'll find a response form to fill out.
Provide us with your contact information, so we can talk to you
personally about getting your political career started on the right
path. Simply email the completed form to [email protected]. I plan to hire
at least 70 field reps to work this fall. You could be one of them.

As an LI field rep, you will travel to the campuses in your region to
identify, recruit, organize, and train conservatives to win battles
against the radical left on their campuses.

LI will fly you to the Institute's Arlington, VA, headquarters for eight
days of intensive training in late August and provide you with
everything you need to succeed. You may know of others who should join
LI as field reps. On the response form below you'll find the space to
let me know their contact information. Or you could have them contact us
directly.

Get paid, fight the left, launch your exciting political career, and
have fun doing it!

Be aware that these positions fill up fast. Time is of the essence as
you make this decision for your future.

Cordially,
Morton Blackwell
President
