Giuliani's Narrow Reading Of The Second Amendment: ...Since Giuliani
also claims to support "the right to bear arms" (a right that is
actually mentioned in the Constitution), he should, by similar logic,
advocate the use of taxpayer money to buy guns for poor people. But the
idea would never occur to him, because his sudden interest in the Second
Amendment, like his sudden interest in strict constructionism, is merely
an affectation intended to allay the concerns of Republican primary
voters...

Romney's Hunting Record Irrelevant: Dave Kopel opines, "...As a Second
Amendment supporter, I don't care about Romney's hunting history. I've
never hunted, nor has Don Kates, who is one of the most influential
pro-Second Amendment scholars ever. I know plenty of outstanding
pro-rights legislators and activists who have never hunted, or who
haven't been hunting for many years..."

DC Files Parker Appeal: Attorneys for the District sought yesterday
[April 9] to preserve the city's gun-control law, asking a federal
appeals court to reconsider a recent decision that called some
restrictions unconstitutional...The District could have appealed
directly to the Supreme Court, and the case might wind up there.

Florida Poll Narrowly Backs Parking-Lot Storage: Employers should not be
allowed to stop employees from bringing firearms to work, even if they
are stowed away in a parked car. That's the opinion of 52 percent of the
457 responses to the latest Business Pulse Survey, the Tampa Bay
Business Journal's weekly, non-scientific online poll designed to
provide a snapshot of what readers are thinking.

Instant Background Check A Bad Idea: GOA's Larry Pratt argues that since
background checks don't "keep guns out of the wrong hands" in the first
place, it makes no sense to expand the program, as would be legislated
by Carolyn McCarthy.

Another Look At "Hoplophobia": Mike Vanderboegh looks at the opposition
to a memorial statue of a Navy SEAL from Littleton CO because he is
depicted holding his service rifle and offers some insight into Jeff
Cooper's term for people with irrational fear of weapons.

VPC Claims American Firearm Ownership Hits Low: Contrary to public
claims by the gun industry and the gun lobby, firearms ownership has
declined dramatically over the past 35 years according to new survey
data from the General Social Survey (GSS) released today by the National
Opinion Research Center (NORC) at the University of Chicago. (If this is
the case, why are organizations such as VPC so rabid about banning
private ownership of firearms? Wouldn't the "problem" solve itself in a
few more years?)

NYC Mayor Compares Teachers' Union To NRA: Mayor Bloomberg is sick and
tired of getting flak for how he's handled the takeover of city schools
- suggesting his critics are no better than the rabidly pro-gun NRA.
Bloomberg said his detractors, including the teachers union, are merely
a "small chorus" that supports the status quo for its own self-interest,
just like the National Rifle Association.

Oops, Wrong House: A group of two to five burglars who broke into a
Portland OR home decided to leave when the homeowner was able to reach
his pistol. The homeowner fired at least shot while chasing them down
the street. One of the group was found by police, felled by an asthma

California Poised To Ban Some Lead Bullets: If the state Fish and Game
Commission likes what it hears Friday, hunters in San Benito County may
have to switch from lead to copper bullets to help preserve California's
condor population...But some sportsmen question whether lead bullets
really contribute significantly to lead poisoning in condors, and also
whether those pushing for the ban on lead bullets are really going after
gun-owner rights.

Police Department To Purchase SIG P220 Revolvers: Leaving us guessing as
to whether the ignorance is on the part of the chief of police or the
reporter and his editor, article reports that the Troy NY police
department "will switch to a new service revolver later this spring."
The next step will be to purchase new rifles for the patrol cars, the
chief said. The department currently uses Mini 14s for patrols and
intends to switch to AR-15s.

Canadian Long-Gun Owners Get One-Year Reprieve: Hundreds of thousands of
long-gun owners were quietly given a one-year reprieve by the federal
government this week, exempting them from having to get licences for
another year, CTV News reported last night. Prime Minister Stephen
Harper's Conservatives, who have long opposed the Liberal-era federal
gun registry but until now have left it on the back burner, say that
long-gun owners have until May of 2008 to register their weapons.
