A Valentine's Day Massacre (Of The Constitution): Mark Alexander

Debate As North Dakota Stand-Your-Ground Bill Heads To Senate: North
Dakota law already says people have no duty to retreat from attack
within their homes or places of work, a University of North Dakota law
professor says. HB 1319, which has passed the House and is awaiting
hearing by the Senate, would remove current language saying the use of
deadly force is not justified if it can be avoided...

Meanwhile, In Texas...: The Dallas Morning News editorializes in support
of the bill to remove the requirement that crime victims fearing for
their safety on their own property "retreat" before responding with
deadly force. (It's not clear why the writer needed to disavow "assault
weapons" in the same editorial.)

Kansas Bill Would Prohibit Local CCW Bans: A Sedgwick County state
senator defended a bill to pre-empt local gun ordinances at a House
committee hearing Thursday. Sen. Phil Journey, R-Haysville, told a
largely sympathetic Federal and State Affairs Committee that cities and
counties had gone too far in regulating gun carrying by
concealed-weapons permit holders. "The permit holder from Johnson County
won't know what the rules are when they go to Dodge City or Wichita,"
Journey said.

Arizona Governor Vetoes Self-Defense Bill: Gov. Janet Napolitano vetoed
a bill Friday afternoon that would have granted a new trial for Harold
Fish, who was convicted of murder after shooting a man on a hiking
trail. A 2006 law made it easier for defendants to argue self-defense in
court, but the Legislature this year wanted to make sure the law was
retroactive and applied to Fish's case. (Napolitano is a former prosecutor.)

Another "Outdoors Writer" Exposed: Legal scholar David Hardy looks at
Bill Schneider, author of "NRA Destroys Longtime Friend," and finds that
he is a shill for the phony American Hunters and Shooters Association
and the equally phony GunGuys blog.

Large Ammo Cache Ignites In Fire: Firefighters responding to a house
fire in a Norco CA neighborhood were greeted with a dangerous surprise:
gunfire. Lots of it. Authorities on Thursday found a cache containing
more than 1 million rounds of ammunition and 75 firearms, ranging from
small handguns to assault rifles, throughout the burning home and in a
shaft and tunnel under the garage. (While ammunition can detonate in a
fire, it "fires" at much lower velocity than it would if it were
supported by a firing chamber. I suspect that even some firefighting
personnel don't understand the difference between black powder and
smokeless powder.)

Rule Five Reminder: A SWAT team in Colorado is missing an MP5 submachine
gun after the vehicle of a team member was burglarized in the parking
lot of a sports grill as the team spent a night out together.
(Insufficient information is provided to tell whether the firearm was
secured in a locked mount of any sort. Rule Five: Maintain control of
your firearm.)
