Another Mayor Leaves Bloomberg Coalition: A third mayor has bowed out of
New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg's anti-gun mayors' coalition, saying he
is in favor of disarming criminals, but "not at the risk of losing our
Constitutional freedom." SAF learned from the staff at Gun Week that Rio
Rancho, NM Mayor Kevin Jackson has withdrawn from Mayors Against Illegal
Guns, without having attended a single meeting of the group, which now
reportedly involves more than 150 mayors.

Virginians Continue To Fight Bloomberg Lawsuit Campaign: Next to the
cash register of the Bob Moates Sport Shop in Chesterfield County, near
the tanks of live bait, is a sign telling customers about the Bloomberg
Gun GiveAway. For every $100 that customers spend at the sporting goods
and Civil War-relics dealership, they get one ticket for a chance to win
a gun in a drawing held by the Virginia Citizens Defense League.

OFCC Warns GOP On Giuliani: A recent article from Townhall.com recounts
former Mayor of New York City and Presidential hopeful Rudolph
Giuliani's anti-gun views. History has repeatedly told the Republican
National Committee that a candidate that does not support the individual
right to keep and bear arms will not be supported by the large majority
of their members. Unfortunately, it appears as if the GOP has not yet
learned that important lesson.

"We Liked His Choice Of Weapon": In the aftermath of an incident in
which a DC homeowner had access only to a frying pan to use against an
armed-robbery suspect who entered his home, a DC Metro PD commander made
it a point, after calling the man a hero, to state "We liked his choice
of weapon." (The smart money, however, is not betting that frying pans
will soon be carried on the duty belts of Metro PD officers.)

Cleveland Court - Control Guns, Not Criminals: The Cleveland Municipal
Court has launched a program that they think will help clear up some
25,000 outstanding warrants and get guns out of criminal hands. The
scheme calls for known, wanted criminals to walk into a police station,
turn in a gun, and walk out without posting bail for their outstanding
warrants. The Buckey Firearms Association shows the problems with this
scheme.

Texas Castle-Doctrine Bills Discussed: Article appears to contain some
journalistic license (an assailant armed with a knife would generally be
considered to present a deadly threat) but its overall thrust appears to
support increased rights for Texans to defend their homes.

Georgia House Passes Vehicle-Carry Bill: The House approved a measure
Monday that would let gun owners carry their firearms anywhere in their
vehicles, despite objections from critics who said it could put police
officers and children at risk....The bill, which passed 130-38, now
moves to the Senate, which has already passed another measure dealing
with gun owners and vehicles. The Senate plan would allow employees to
store the firearms in their cars or trucks in parking lots at their
workplaces, as long as those areas are open to the public.

California Rifle Match Canceled Over Legal Quirk: The first Project
Appleseed rifle match in California appears to have been canceled over
threats to apply a California law that bans paramilitary training. The
nonprofit project was started by the Revolutionary War Veterans
Association, a gun club in North Carolina. "Appleseed is about American
as apple pie," said Fred Dailey, one of the founders. "All we want to do
is teach marksmanship, teach about the Revolutionary War and leave
behind better shooters."

about his use of extreme caution and patience with a gun.

Lies, Damned Lies And Statistics: In the first item on the linked page,
the editor of The Wall Street Journal dissects the faulty statistical
interpretation put forth by USA Today in an article about suicide among
police officers. While the other point in the article, about a culture
that suppresses expression of emotion may bear noting, the critique of
the statistical interpretation is valuable because the same claim is
made about firearm owners.

Armed America Reviewed: According to The Washington Times, one good
thing that came from the initially favorable response to Michael
Bellesiles' now-discredited book Arming America is Clayton Cramer's
response in the form of Armed America. "Mr. Cramer writes in a clear if
dry style, patiently cataloguing example after example of guns'
historical prevalence. The book weighs in at a tidy 243 pages (excluding
the bibliography and footnotes, but including the helpful gun-terms
glossary) yet demands some effort and concentration. "
