Giuliani No Friend To Gun Owners: In response to New York City Mayor
Rudolph Giuliani's filing of a statement of candidacy with the Federal
Election Commission yesterday, indicating that he would enter the 2008
presidential race as a Republican, the firearms industry's trade
association, the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF), reminded
America's sportsmen and gun-enthusiasts of the former mayor's record of
hostility toward firearms and gun-owners.

McCarthy Seeks Expansion Of Brady Bill: On the first full day of the new
Congress, US Representative Carolyn McCarthy (D-Garden City NY)
introduced a measure that would force states to comply with an automated
system that does background checks on those attempting to keep guns out
of the hands of convicted felons and others (sic). While there are some
who are calling it "the first major anti-gun bill" of the
Democrat-controlled Congress, and a threat to Second Amendment rights,
McCarthy and others claim that the measure is simply a way to bring the
nation up to speed on a system authorized and already in place.

Castle Doctrine Bill Advances In Virginia: Self-defense Bill 1626
suggests people in their own homes can use deadly physical force against
an intruder, if the resident believes there is imminent danger of bodily
harm. Current law allows for the use of deadly force - but only if the
resident believes the intruder will cause death - or serious bodily injury.

Meanwhile, In Arkansas...: The proposed "Stand Your Ground" law,
intended to ease the current self-defense law requiring a person to
retreat, if possible, before using deadly force, was withdrawn from
committee consideration Tuesday. Sponsors said they would consider
changes. "We still think the intent is good, we'll just have to work on
the language," said Rep. Randy Stewart, D-Kirby, co-sponsor of House
Bill 1027, after the House Judiciary Committee heard more than three
hours of testimony on the proposal.

Minnesota Appears To Lack Castle Doctrine: Article about the use of
firearms in home-defense suggests that Minnesota may require residents
to retreat within their own homes. (There's a big difference, obscured
in this article, between a legally mandated duty to retreat and a
tactical decision to defend yourself from a pre-selected safe room.)

Some People Never Learn: A TV station in Ohio reports on the controversy
over the safety of Glock pistols. You've really got to watch the video
version. The police chief repeats the same Rule Two violation that
already cost him one finger and the gun shop owner repeatedly violates
Rule Two because he is certain that the pistol is unloaded. (Rule One:
All firearms are always loaded. Rule Two: Never let the muzzle cross
anything you're not prepared to shoot.)
