Backfire?: Two eighth-grade students in Massachusetts devised a
science-fair project, to prove the dangers of BB guns, in which they
would fire them into ballistic gelatin. They were disqualified from
competing because the judges felt that BB guns are too dangerous.
(Proper gelatin testing is done with calibrated ballistic gelatin. The
calibration consists of firing a pellet gun into the gelatin; the pellet
must penetrate within specified limits.)

Does Firearms Training Constitute Lobbying?: A Utah legislator is under
attack for providing free firearms training to the governor, the
lieutenant governor, legislative colleagues and other state officials.
He is being criticized by prohibitionists for "unfair lobbying." (It is
unclear if the training meets the requirement to apply for a Utah

When Guns Are Outlawed...: Boston police claim that gang members are
using a group of shared "community guns." One is reported to be a
40-caliber pistol, presumably a Glock, linked to seven shootings "by
shell casings tattooed with the gun's trademark rifling." (It's hard to
tell if the quoted material is police disinformation or media ignorance.
Ejected cases are marked by the breech face, extractor and ejector, not
rifling. Further, Glocks have polygonal rifling, which does not create
identifiable marking on fired bullets.)

South Africa's Firearm Amnesty: The South African government claims that
80,147 firearms were surrendered during the firearm-amnesty period.
Doubtless they were all surrendered by law-abiding citizens because
