unusual bill supported by the NRA. The bill would require background
checks for all gun-show purchases (i.e., private-party transfers) but
would require the state police to destroy entries in the purchase

Battered-Wife Freed From Prison: A New York woman, convicted in 1984 as
an accomplice to the murder of her battering husband, has been freed
from prison. Prosecutors finally agreed that she would have been
eligible for a "battered wife defense," had it been available at the
time. (A battered-wife defense is an exception to the usual requirement
that deadly force must be justified by an immediate, otherwise
unavoidable threat of death or serious bodily injury.)

British Sub Base Guards Update Weaponry: Police who guard Britain's
Clyde submarine base are being issued HK MP7 submachine guns, chambered
in a 4.6x30mm cartridge, whose bullet will penetrate soft body armor.
Presumably, they had previously been armed with 9mm MP5's, probably in a
semiautomatic variant. Of note is that they are not equipped with
Britain's much maligned bullpup military rifle, chambered in 5.56x45mm
(.223).
