[Top DL]: Quake 1 game without original CD music score. Contains multiple versions and MP3 files of the music. Recommended that you unzip it and throw out what you don't need before spending ages transferring it to an old computer. The Zip contains Toast images.
[2nd DL]: Just the Quake 1.08 installer and 1.09 update. Installer is for PPC, but will allow you to run it on a 68k Mac if you need the files. Installs IPX and InputSprocket without asking (which aren't needed for the 68k version). A Self Extracting Archive in a macbin. Installer and updaters are a pair of Disk Copy images for easy access on a 68k Mac (but will work great on PPC too).
[3rd DL]: Full CD with music, imaged as a bin/cue pair, compressed with OS X zip. Burn the image with Toast on a Mac or Imgburn on Windows to make a CD that contains both the game and audio partitions.
[4th DL]: Quake 1.09 Update patch ? Essential for restoring CD audio play in Macs running OS's 8.1 - 9.2.2
[5th DL]: QuakeWorld and GLQuakeWorld clients
[6th DL]: MacQuake68k Port (engine only), the binary is dated 2017 - may not have sound.
[7th DL]: MacQuake68k Port (engine only), the binary is dated 2021 - some sound compatibility.
[8th DL]: Quake Mac demo.
[9th+ DL]: user additions/full game expansions.
[9th DL]: Quake Mission Pack No. 1: Scourge of Armagon, first official expansion developed by Hipnotic Interactive.
[10th DL]: Quake Mission Pack No. 2: Dissolution of Eternity, second official expansion developed by [Rogue Entertainment][4].
[11th DL]: [Malice][5] has a reputation as being the best of the Quake 1 conversions.
[12th DL]: Shrak is a total conversion by Quantum Axcess.
[13th DL]: Nehahra is another Quake conversion. The OS X version of the Nehahra expansion can be found [here][6].
[14th DL]: Aftershock for Quake is a CD published by [GT Interactive][7], containing more Quake levels.
[15th DL]: Q!ZONE is a collection of Quake maps published by [WizardWorks][8].
[16th DL]: Tomorrow Never Dies is a total conversion made to promote the 1997 James Bond movie.
The total conversion X-Men: The Ravages of Apocalypse can be found
[here][9].

To use the two MacQuake68k Engines, you'll need the demo or full game
files from another source. Drop the 68k application into the folder
and double click it. Note that this doesn't seem to be a fully
polished port, its pretty amazing that it runs but a) it is slow on
real 68k hardware and b) there may be bugs. It would be great if
someone could squeeze some more performance out of it some day.

> Its main technological innovation is the use of a true 3D engine -
> the levels themselves as well as the enemies are polygonal. This not
> only allows for more natural level designs and character animations,
> but also for more realistic lighting and the inclusion of simulated
> physics that have an effect on gameplay: grenades can bounce off
> walls and around corners, for example.
>
> In single-player mode, gameplay consists mainly of proceeding
> through the levels (spread over four distinct episodes) in search of
> an exit, killing everything that moves. Interaction with the game
> world is reduced to a minimum: since there is no use key, buttons
> are pressed by running into or shooting at them. As in id's earlier
> games, many secrets are waiting to be discovered, including a few
> hidden levels.
>
> Unlike Doom's rather straightforward design that couples futuristic
> environments with demonic imagery, the theme of Quake's levels,
> enemies and weapons is not so easily pinpointed. While each episode
> begins in a futuristic military base (with a technological
> 'slipgate' as the level exit), later levels take place in
> environments inspired by medieval fantasy and gothic horror
> (castles, dungeons and caverns) and the player passes through
> magical portals to advance. In a departure from Doom's colorful
> environments, all Quake levels are dominated by earth colors.
>
> The enemies conform to the mishmash of designs: there are human
> opponents armed with shotguns and energy weapons in the early
> levels, while the later levels include medieval knights, ghosts,
> zombies, ogres (armed with grenade launchers and chainsaws) and some
> more unearthly beasts. The player's weapons, while relatively
> modern, all have a low-tech feel. Besides a (bloodstained) axe,
> there are shotguns, nailguns, rocket and grenade launchers and the
> Thunderbolt, which discharges electrical energy.
>
> Quake was one of the first games playable natively over the Internet
> in addition to LANs. The single-player levels can be played
> cooperatively, but the game is most famous for its deathmatch mode.
> One-on-one duels, team play and free-for-all competition are
> possible. The emphasis is on fast reaction and skillful maneuvering
> through the levels. All of the single-player maps can be used as
> arenas, but the game also comes with six maps especially designed
> for deathmatch.
