A [Live Picture][2] competitor originally created by [Matisse][3]
developers Fauve Software.

xRes's marquee feature is xRes Mode, which lets you compose ridiculous
amounts of layers of very high resolution images using proxies. When
finished, xRes processes the proxy layers overnight to save as an
image composition through a batch operation.

As Live Picture's development wound down, Macromedia abandoned future
development of xRes and had a few members of the FreeHand team spin up
[Fireworks][4], a new application for handling web based imaging.

Bundled with [Freehand Graphics Studio 7][5] and [Director 6.5
Multimedia Studio][6].
