Classic WWW Server software, WebSTAR for the Macintosh.

 * WebSTAR Features
   * World-class Web server can serve millions of connections a day.
   * Serves multiple web sites, with different domain names and even multiple IP addresses from one Macintosh.
   * SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) version of the web server lets you host a web store or serve other confidential material using high-quality encryption.
   * Integrated FTP Server lets visitors to your site download or upload to specified folders.
   * Caching Proxy server for optimizing network bandwidth and increased network security.
   * WebSTAR Admin application provides secure remote administration over TCP/IP.
   * Sophisticated file information and data caching automatically store frequently-used files in RAM for faster serving.
   * Log options provide compatibility with the major log analysis programs, automated log archiving.
   * Works with third-party CGIs and Plug-In Modules, as well as Java Sapplets and Servlets, to access databases, integrate mailing lists, customize sites, automate guestbook and email forms, and more.
   * WebObjects Adapter connects WebSTAR to Apple's powerful WebObjects middleware for custom interaction and access to large databases.
   * Directory Indexer can display the contents of any specified folder on your site.
   * Integrated Search feature allows you to index and search your site using Apple Information Access Toolkit.
   * Powerful Server-Side-Include (SSI) tools let you add page counters, display dates and other variables, show content based on browser type or domain accessing your server, and more.
   * Serves some files, such as Adobe Acrobat PDF files, in "byte-range" sections rather than forcing the viewer to wait for the whole file.
   * Translates server-side image maps.
   * Supports sending of simple email forms via SMTP.
   * Support for HTTP 1.1 and persistent connections.

Compatibility
Architecture: 68k PPC PPC (Carbonized)

System Requirements

 * Hardware
   * WebSTAR 3 will run on any Mac OS computer with a minimum of a 68020 processor or a PowerPC 601 processor. Compatible models include the Mac II, SE/30, Quadra, and Power Macintosh series.
   * The WebSTAR server includes Web, FTP and Proxy servers. The servers are installed on one computer, and cannot be divided among multiple machines.
   * For best performance in processor-intensive tasks such as calculation, use a machine with a PowerPC 604e, 750, or better. For best response when serving large files, or supporting many Proxy users, make sure you have a fast SCSI hard drive.
   * Some components of WebSTAR, such as the Java Sapplet Runner and Java Servlet Runner are PowerPC-only, and will not run on 680x0 machines.
 * System Software
   * WebSTAR 3 requires Mac System 7.0 or greater, and is compatible with Mac OS 8 and 8.1. It is compatible with the HFS+ disk format.
   * To use Java, you must have Mac System 7.5 or greater, and Apple's Macintosh Runtime for Java (MRJ).
   * AppleScript and Apple's Thread Manager are also required. These system extensions are automatically installed when you install System 7.5 and later, and may be included in the System itself. For earlier systems, the WebSTAR Installer will automatically add them to your Extensions folder, if they are not available.
   * To access your WebSTAR server once it is running, you need a web browser, such as Netscape Navigator/Communicator, Microsoft Internet Explorer, or OmniWeb. For testing your FTP server, you can also use a separate FTP client such as Fetch or Anarchie. The browser and FTP client can be on the same machine as the server, but for best testing, they should be on another machine.
 * TCP/IP: Open Transport or MacTCP
   * The server machine must run a TCP/IP extension: either MacTCP or Open Transport (version 1.1.1 or later). If necessary, the WebSTAR Installer will automatically install MacTCP on older 680x0 and NuBus-based Power Macintosh computers. Open Transport is automatically installed when you install Mac OS 7.6 (or later). Open Transport 1.3 is installed when you install Mac OS 8.1, and reduces the system's vulnerability to certain network attacks.
   * If you plan to use IP-multihoming to support several websites, you must run Open Transport 1.3 or greater. You can use Virtual Domains with earlier versions of Open Transport or with MacTCP.
 * Java Virtual Machine
   * To work with Java Servlets, you must install a Java Virtual Machine, preferably Apple's MRJ (Mac OS Runtime for Java) version 2.0 or later.
   * The MRJ 2.0 Installer is included on the WebSTAR CD. You can also download it from Apple.
 * Memory Requirements
   * The WebSTAR server application requires a 5.5 MB of RAM for its memory partition, when installed with default settings. The minimum is 2.5 MB (without optional Plug-Ins).
     * If you are using Virtual Memory on a Power Macintosh, memory requirements will be lower.
     * The WebSTAR Admin application requires 2.5 MB of RAM for its memory partition.
     * If you plan to test your server with clients running on the same machine, you'll need enough RAM for a web browser and an FTP client.
     * If you plan to run a database or other application on the same machine as the WebSTAR server, be sure the system has enough memory for all applications to run at once.
 * Suggested Memory Configurations
   * The default memory partition for WebSTAR is enough for most medium-sized web sites. The WebSTAR server may require additional memory if you want to serve many requests at the same time, or if you plan to use third-party Plug-Ins.
   * WebSTAR Plug-Ins share the WebSTAR server's memory allocation. If you use WebSTAR Search to index large amounts of data, you'll need to increase the server's memory partition. Third-party Plug-Ins often require additional memory as well: be sure to check the documentation before installing one.
   * Memory Suggestions
     * Small site: at least 16 MB installed RAM. Of that, 5.5 MB will be used by the WebSTAR server.
     * Large site: 24 MB installed RAM, depending on other applications running on the same machine. Of that, you may need to allocate 6 to 10 MB to the WebSTAR server.
 * Network Requirements
   * WebSTAR requires a connection to the Internet or to an internal TCP/IP Intranet network.
   * Direct TCP/IP Internet connections, such as T3, T1, fractional T1, and DSL, allow your server to respond very quickly. Dedicated ISDN and 56K connections are also reasonably fast, for smaller sites. A 28.8 bps modem connected via PPP or SLIP will also work, although it is not recommended.
   * IP Address
     * The WebSTAR server must run with a full TCP/IP connection to the Internet (or to a local network, for Intranet use). That means you need to obtain a static IP address and configure it in the MacTCP or TCP/IP control panel.
